ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods rode the right arm of
Dustin Holthaus to a 4-1 game one win, then erupted offensively for a 16-2 win in the nightcap and a sweep over Missouri Western on Tuesday at Phil Welch Stadium.
Holthaus (4-0) tossed a complete game three hitter allowing just one run, a solo home run in the seventh inning, in game one. He struck out three and walked three, while throwing just 73 pitches.
Thomas Holiday provided all the offense Washburn (11-5, 10-4 MIAA) would need with a solo home run in the first inning.
Brian Clark and
Matt Raabe had RBIs in the third inning and Clark drove in his second run with a single in the fourth for the 4-1 win.
The Ichabods struck first in game two with a pair of runs in the first inning. Raabe had a two-run double to put WU ahead for good.
Andy Petz highlighted a five-run second inning with a three-run blast to straightaway center field, which put the Ichabods up 7-0.
Thee two teams traded runs in the fourth inning and the Griffons (9-10, 4-10 MIAA) plated another single run in the fifth to pull within 8-2. Washburn extended the lead with two runs in the sixth inning. Clark had an RBI double and Petz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Ichabods put the game away with a six-run eighth inning.
Wes Joy led off the inning with a mammoth home run to right field. Petz added another RBI, as did
Dane Simoneau and
David Wade had a two-run double. The game ended in the bottom of the eighth due to the 10-run rule.
Washburn pounded out 16 hits in the contest to just six for Missouri Western. Clark was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Petz added 5 RBI.
Raul Guevara (3-0) earned the win for WU going five innings and allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out eight, while walking four.
Mitchell Carver tossed two innings in relief and
Alex Coons pitched a perfect ninth.
Jon Cochrane (1-2) took the loss for MWSU after allowing seven runs on five hits in two innings.
These two teams will conclude their series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 4 p.m.
