Ichabods split DH at Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods split an MIAA doubleheader at Missouri Southern on Friday afternoon at Joe Becker Stadium. Washburn won game one 3-2 before falling 13-3 in eight innings in the nightcap. The teams have pushed the final doubleheader of the series to Sunday at noon due to impending rain in the Joplin area.

The Ichabods (12-6, 11-5 MIAA) got on the board first in the opener on a Travis Cruz RBI groundout in the third. The Lions (9-16, 7-11 MIAA) tied the game in the fourth before Washburn regained the lead in the fifth on a home run from Brian Gomez. MSSU tied the game in the bottom of the inning at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the seventh inning when Dane Simoneau drove in the game-winning run with an RBI double.

Brett Ash (2-2) allowed three runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings to earn his second win of the season. Alex Coons struck out the only batter he faced to earn his first save of the season.

Washburn led 1-0 through three innings on a Cameron Kasel home run. The Ichabods took a 2-1 lead after the top of the fifth, but Missouri Southern erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-2 lead.

After the Lions took an 11-2 lead the 'Bods scored one in the top of the eighth, but two runs from MSSU gave them the win by the ten-run rule.

Daren Parker (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.
