TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods dropped game one of an MIAA doubleheader 5-3 to Pittsburg State, but rallied for a 15-3 win in game two to earn a split on Saturday afternoon at Falley Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
Washburn (4-2, 4-2 MIAA) fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first and the Gorillas (4-5, 3-5 MIAA) tacked on two more runs in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. The Ichabods tallied one run in the fifth on a
Brian Clark RBI double. WU rallied with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from
Thomas Holiday and a
Dane Simoneau sacrifice fly, but it was too little too late.
Brett Ash (0-2) allowed five runs on five hits 3.2 innings and took the loss.
Mitchell Carver allowed one hit in 3.1 innings of relief.
Ryan Sorell earned the win for the Gorillas allowing one run on seven hits in six innings of work.
Game two was scoreless through two innings until PSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. The Ichabods responded in a big way scoring 12 runs on just four hits in the bottom of the inning. WU was aided by three bases-loaded walks.
Brian Gomez drove in a pair of runs as did
Andy Petz. Simoneau put the exclamation point on the inning with a three-run home run.
The Gorillas scored two in the top half of the inning to make it 12-3. As the bottom of the fourth was about to begin power went out at Falley Field causing the game to be delayed for an hour and nine minutes. When play resumed the Ichabods scored three in the fourth for the 15-3 lead, highlighted by a
David Wade two-run double. The game ended after the top of the seventh because of the run-rule.
Dustin Holthaus (2-0) picked up the win for Washburn allowing three runs on six hits in five innings.
John Braun and
Drew Mikkelson each recorded a scoreless inning of relief.
