TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods rallied for an 8-7 win in game two to earn a split of an MIAA doubleheader with Pittsburg State on Sunday afternoon at Falley Field. PSU won game one 8-4. The Ichabods will host St. Cloud State for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Washburn (5-3, 5-3 MIAA) trailed 7-4 entering the ninth inning of game two before rallying for four runs to get the win.
Blake Boling earned a bases-loaded walk with two outs to force in the winning run.
Matt Raabe also had a bases-loaded walk in the previous at-bat to tie the game. Vicente Vieyra knocked in the first two runs of the inning with a double to right field.
The Ichabods took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a
Brian Gomez RBI single and Boling's RBI groundout. The Gorillas (5-6, 4-6 MIAA) took the lead in the third with four runs and added three in the fifth. Washburn plated a single run in the fourth inning when Gomez tripled to lead off and later scored on Raabe's RBI single. WU also plated a single run in the fifth on
Wes Joy's first home run of the season.
Alex Coons (1-0) earned the win tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
Daren Parker started the game for Washburn and allowed seven runs on four hits in four innings of work.
Luke Zeller (1-1) took the loss for the Gorillas after he came on in relief with two outs in the ninth. He gave up one hit and walked three without recording an out.
Pittsburg State won game one 8-4. PSU scored single runs in the first and second innings, then plated four in the third to take the lead for good. They tacked on two more in the fourth.
Washburn tied the game in the bottom of the first on an
Andy Petz RBI single. WU scored a single run in the third on a
Dane Simoneau sacrifice fly then two more in the fifth when Simoneau smacked his second home run in as many days.
Danny Cook (1-1) took the loss after giving up eight runs on seven hits in three innings.
Xavier Lewis and
Mitchell List combined for four scoreless innings in relief.
Nate Templeton (2-0) got the win for PSU allowing four runs on five hits in six innings.
