Leading off
Washburn returns to action at the MIAA's Northern Crossover in Maryville, Mo., where they will play five conference foes in non-conference games … the games will not count in the MIAA standings, however they will count for teams regional records … the Lady Blues will be seeing familiar faces as they will open the crossover with Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern, teams they saw last weekend in conference play in Topeka.

Washburn will return to MIAA action when they travel to Southwest Baptist on April 23 and Central Missouri on April 24 before facing Emporia State on April 27. WU will wrap up the regular season at Fort Hays State on May 1 before beginning the MIAA Tournament on May 5.

Washburn splits with Missouri Southern in softball action
(April 10) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues split an MIAA doubleheader with Missouri Southern falling in the first game 3-0 while going into extra innings in the nightcap to take the second game 4-3 in nine innings. Washburn will be back in action on April 16 when they open the MIAA Crossover in Maryville, Mo.
In the opener, Washburn was limited to five hits in the game with three coming from
Tish Williams who was a perfect 3 for 3 in the game.
Jacque Horejsi and
Lindsey Moore each had singles for the Lady Blues. Washburn stranded four base runners in the game while Missouri Southern's Whitney Clute picked up the win scattering the five hits.
Kayla Long took the loss allowing two earned runs forcing the Lions into 12 ground outs.
Washburn needed nine innings to put the Lions away in the second game as
Lindsey Moore collected her first hit of the game driving in
Lauren Himpel with the winning run. Himpel singled to left reaching base and then moved to second on a sac bunt by
Alex Zordel. The Lady Blues fought back from an 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the eighth after the Lions had took the one-run lead in the inning.
Tish Williams singled to lead off the inning and scored from second on an
Ashley Podschun single down the left field line knotting the score at 2-2.
Kelsie Novotny (6-2) pitched two innings for the win relieving
Samantha Farris who tossed the first seven innings of the game.
Britny Cushing had 2 RBI for the Lady Blues and
Jacque Horejsi had two of the nine Washburn hits.
Facts and Figures for the week that was
Washburn went 3-2 last week after sweeping Pittsburg State on April 9 and splitting the doubleheader with Missouri Southern the following day. The Lady Blues lost of the first game of a scheduled doubleheader against Nebraska-Omaha before rains postponed the second game until a later date.
Jacque Horejsi and
Tish Williams led the team with a .467 batting average each going 7 for 15. Williams also scored a team-high five runs.
Lindsey Himpel batted .462 going 6 for 13. Horejsi led thee team with 4 RBI and
Britny Cushing drove in three.
Kayla Long was 1-2 with a 2.00 ERA and
Samantha Farris was 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA.
Base Knocks for this week's action
Washburn has already played both Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern this year and each of them both in the last week … the Lady Blues have not face Central Missouri, Southwest Baptist or Emporia State this season … Washburn has dropped three straight games to the Jennies and 18 straight to Emporia State … the last win for the Lady Blues over the Hornets was April 20, 2005 … the Lady Blues had won 18 straight over Southwest Baptist from April 21, 2001 to the first game of a doubleheader last year in Topeka on April 16, 2009.
