HAYS, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods swept Fort Hays State for the first time since 1994 with wins of 7-2 and 9-7 on Wednesday afternoon at Larks Park. The Ichabods will be back in action this weekend at home against Nebraska-Omaha. The series is slated for a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Fort Hays State (23-13, 16-12 MIAA) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one with a single run in the bottom of the first. The Tigers held the lead until the fourth when Washburn (15-14, 14-12 MIAA) took the lead on a pair of runs on a Vicente Vieyra double to right center.
The Ichabods tacked on five more runs in the sixth inning for a 7-2 lead.
Andy Petz led off with a single and scored on
Dane Simoneau's double to left center.
Brian Gomez had a run-scoring single as did
Wes Joy.
Brian Clark finished off the scoring when he ripped a two-run double down the left field line scoring Gomez and Joy.
FHSU plated one run in the bottom of the sixth, but could get no more off of Washburn starter
Dustin Holthaus (5-2). Holthaus tossed a complete-game allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out three to earn the win.
The Tigers jumped out early again in game two with a pair of first inning runs, but the Ichabods quickly tied the game in the top of the second with two runs of their own. Vieyra was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the first run then
Travis Cruz singled to right to score Vieyra and tie the game.
The 'Bods erupted for six runs in the fourth inning and an 8-2 lead, all of the runs came with two outs. With two on and two out, Clark smacked a double to center scoring Cruz and
Matt Raabe.
Thomas Holiday followed with his third home run of the year to make it 6-2. Following a single by Petz, Simoneau ripped an RBI double to left center and later scored on a
Cameron Kasel single.
The Tigers cut the lead to four with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Washburn responded with one run in the top of the eighth to push the lead back to five at 9-4. Clark was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Holiday's single to center.
Three hits, an error and a hit batter in the eighth led to three runs for Fort Hays State in the eighth pulling the Tigers to within a pair at 9-7.
Raul Guevara (4-2) allowed two runs on eight hits in five innings to earn the win for Washburn in game two.
Drew Mikkelson tossed two innings of relief giving up two runs and
Alex Coons pitched the final two innings allowing three runs on three hits.
