Ichabods salvage series split with UNO

TOPEKA, Kan. -- For the second straight day the Washburn Ichabods rallied to win game two and salvage a split of an MIAA doubleheader with Nebraska-Omaha. The Mavericks won game one on Sunday 11-6 and the Ichabods took game two 6-4 at Falley Field. Washburn will be back in action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Drury starting at 12 p.m. at Falley Field.

After UNO (26-12, 22-8 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, the Ichabods (17-16, 16-14 MIAA) plated four runs to grab the early lead. Brian Clark started things off with an RBI-single. Dane Simoneau had a run-scoring single as did David Wade. Cameron Kasel added a sacrifice fly to stake the 'Bods to an early three-run advantage. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Mavericks regained the lead for good with five runs in the second inning. UNO plated two more in third to take an 8-4 lead.

Vicente Vieyra had an RBI-triple in the fourth and scored on a Clark groundout to pull WU within two at 8-6. Nebraska-Omaha scored a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the 11-6 win.

Dustin Holthaus (5-3) allowed seven runs on seven hits in two innings and was tagged with the loss. Ryan Tomlinson (1-1) earned the win for UNO tossing five innings and allowed six runs on seven hits.

Washburn plated single runs in the first and second innings of game two to take an early 2-0 lead. Thomas Holiday drove in Travis Cruz with an RBI groundout in the first inning. Brian Gomez belted his second home run of the season in the second inning.

The Mavericks tied the game with two runs in the third and took the lead with two more in the fourth. Simoneau smacked his third home run of the season leading off the fourth to pull Washburn within one at 4-3. The Ichabods took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth. Holiday led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Andy Petz. Simoneau, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, drove Holiday in with a single. David Wade came on to pinch hit and drove in Simoneau with a run-scoring triple to left center. Washburn tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single from Blake Boling.

John Braun (1-0) earned the win in relief for Washburn. He allowed three hits in two innings. Alex Coons recorded his second save of the season after tossing two innings of one-hit ball. Starter Raul Guevara allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits with seven strikeouts in five innings.

Matt Tew (3-3) took the loss for UNO after allowing five runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings.
