Leading off
Washburn returns to MIAA play with a pair of conference twinbills at Southwest Baptist and at Central Missouri on April 23 and 24 respectively … Washburn went 3-2 at the MIAA Northern Crossover last weekend in Maryville … one of the losses came to Southwest Baptist in a 1-0 defeat … one of the wins came over Central Missouri in an 11-7 victory.

Washburn falls to #4 Emporia State in extra innings
(April 18) MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team wrapped up the MIAA April Crossover with a 3-2 overall record after falling 2-1 in eight innings to No. 4-ranked Emporia State.
Against the Hornets, ESU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a home run by Linda Ketter. In the bottom of the fifth, Washburn tied the score on an RBI single by
Lindsey Moore through the right side scoring
Lauren Himpel who doubled in the inning down the left field line.
In the eighth inning using the international tie breaker, ESU's Angela Mahan hit a sac fly scoring Jenna Potter putting the Hornets up 2-1. In the Lady Blues half of the eighth inning,
Lauren Himpel was placed on second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Alex Zordel. Moore then popped out to second and
Marissa Martin went down on strikes to end the game.
Kayla Long (10-11) took the loss allowing the one earned run in the third while scattering four hits. ESU's Jennifer Heerey improved to 17-1 on the season while allowing three Washburn hits.
Facts and Figures for the week that was
Washburn went 3-2 with all five games being played at the MIAA Northern Crossover.
Ashley Podschun, who earned all-tourney honors at second base, led the Lady Blues with a .412 batting average going 7 for 17 with a team-high 7 RBI and 7 runs scored. She also recorded a .941 slugging percentage. She also had two of the seven home runs for the Lady Blues during the week. Alex Zorel was 5 for 13 with a .385 batting average while driving in four runs.
Tish Williams drew eight walks recording a .526 on base percentage. Kortnea Morgan was 1-1 with a team-low 1.91 ERA and
Kayla Long was also 1-1 with a 2.8 ERA in three starts with two complete games.
Base Knocks for this week's action
Washburn played both Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist last weekend at the MIAA Northern Crossover … they topped Central Missouri and fell to Southwest Baptist … Washburn leads the all-time series with SBU 37-6 and had won 18 straight over Southwest Baptist from April 21, 2001 to the first game of a doubleheader last year in Topeka on April 16, 2009.
