TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods rallied to win game two of a non-conference doubleheader and split with Drury on Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field. The Ichabods dropped game one 9-3, but rallied for a 4-3 win in game two to earn the split. Washburn will be back in action for the final time at home on Friday against Emporia State at 4 p.m.
The Ichabods (18-17) fell behind 2-0 in game one, but cut the lead in half in the second inning on a
Dane Simoneau RBI-double. The Panthers (21-20) added a single run in the third and two more in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.
Brian Clark homered to lead off the sixth and the cut the lead to 5-2, but four runs in the top of the seventh by Drury blew the game open. The 'Bods added a single run in the seventh on a
Thomas Holiday RBI single, but it wasn't enough in the 9-3 loss.
Mitchell Carver (0-1) took the loss for WU after allowing five runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Stephen Bloss (2-3) got the win for DU allowing two runs on five hits in six innings.
Washburn jumped on top 1-0 after one inning in game two.
Travis Ice led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on Holiday's RBI single. The Panthers tied the game in the second, but WU came right back with a run in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
David Wade knocked in Clark with a run-scoring single through the left side.
Drury came back with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. The Panthers were looking to add another run, but Holiday gunned down a Panther runner at the plate to end the fourth and keep the Ichabod deficit at one.
Washburn tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when
Blake Boling grounded out allowing
Brian Gomez to score from third.
The game remained tied into the sixth.
Cameron Kasel led off with a walk and advanced to third on Gomez's single to right.
Wes Joy grounded into a double play, but Kasel was able to score the go-ahead run and the Ichabods retired the Panthers in order in the seventh for the win.
Holiday and Gomez each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Holiday finished the day 5-for-7 with two runs driven in.
Washburn starter
Danny Cook (2-4) earned the win after tossing six solid innings. Cook allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out one.
Alex Coons earned his third save of the season pitching a perfect seventh.
Sam Pirtle (1-1) took the loss for Drury giving up one run on two hits in relief of starter Tyler Abma who allowed three runs on five hits in three innings.
