EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods were swept in an MIAA doubleheader at No. 12 ranked Emporia State on Sunday afternoon. The Hornets took game one 3-0 and completed the sweep with a 13-2 seven-inning win in game two. The teams will conclude the Turnpike Tussle with a doubleheader in Topeka on Monday at 4 p.m.
The Hornets (33-11, 25-8 MIAA) plated single runs in the first, third and fifth innings for the 3-0 win in game one. Washburn (18-19, 16-16 MIAA) only mustered five hits against ESU starter Ben Graham.
Brett Ash (3-4) suffered the loss for the Ichabods. He allowed three runs on eight over six innings.
Emporia State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two, but WU rallied to tie the game with a pair of runs in the second inning.
Brian Gomez and
Matt Raabe each had RBI groundouts in the inning.
The Hornets opened up a four-run lead in the third inning and made it 7-2 with a single run in the fourth. ESU added six more runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 13-2 lead then retired the Ichabods in order in the seventh to close out the win by run-rule.
Daren Parker (1-3) took the loss for WU after giving up nine runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings. Jake Hosey (7-0) earned the complete game win for the Hornets.
