TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods rebounded from a game one loss to split the final two games of their MIAA series against ninth-ranked Emporia State on Monday evening at Falley Field. ESU won game one 10-6 and Washburn won game two by run-rule 11-1 in seven innings. The Ichabods return to action on Tuesday at Rockhurst. The two teams will play a single nine-inning game starting at 6 p.m.

The Ichabods (19-20, 17-17 MIAA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one with a pair of first inning runs on a Dane Simoneau two-run single that scored Brian Clark and Thomas Holiday.

The Hornets (35-12, 27-9 MIAA) plated three runs in the third to take a one-run lead, but WU answered back with a single run in the bottom of the inning on a lead-off home run by Clark. ESU took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fourth then broke the game open with five runs in the sixth, all the runs coming with two outs.

Washburn scored a single run in the sixth on a Wes Joy RBI groundout and two more in the seventh on a David Wade double, but the rally came up short and ESU came away with the 10-6 win.

Dustin Holthaus (5-4) took the loss for Washburn after giving up eight runs on four hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out four, but walked four and hit three batters.

The Ichabods took the early lead in game two as well with a single run in the second inning. Matt Raabe reached base on an error and went to third on Brian Gomez's single up the middle. Raabe later scored on a balk giving WU the 1-0 lead.

Washburn added five runs in the fifth inning thanks in large part to two ESU errors. Holiday had a bases-loaded double to score two. Simoneau had an RBI and Andy Petz added an RBI single.

The lead was 6-1 in the seventh when the Ichabods plated five more runs to end the game by 10-run rule. Petz had a two-run triple and later scored on a Gomez single to right. Clark doubled to put the game-ending runs in scoring position and Holiday knocked in his third and fourth runs of the game with a single to center.

Washburn starter Raul Guevara (5-2) was brilliant on the mound tossing a complete-game one-hitter. Guevara held the Hornets hitless until a two-out double in the sixth plated ESU's only run of the game. He struck out nine batters and walked five in seven solid innings.
