MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods salvaged a split in the final doubleheader of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Field. Northwest Missouri won game one 3-2 in eight innings and the Ichabods took the nightcap 5-0 to salvage the split. Washburn ends the season at 21-23 overall and 18-20 in MIAA play.

Washburn got on the board first in the third inning of game one when Brian Clark belted a solo home run to left center. The Bearcats (20-32, 18-20 MIAA) came back with two runs in the bottom half on a two-run single from Matt Stice. Down to their final out, the Ichabods tied the game when Wes Joy scored on a wild pitch dropped third strike. WU had runners at second and third, but were unable to plate the go-ahead run. NWMSU went down in order in the bottom of the inning and the game went to extra innings. The Bearcats won the game with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth.

Raul Guevara (5-3) went the distance for Washburn and suffered the loss. He gave up three runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings. Guevara struck out three, but did walk seven batters. Jayson Huett (4-3) earned the win in relief for NWMSU. He allowed one run on four hits in 3.1 innings and struck out three Ichabods.

RBI singles by Andy Petz and Dane Simoneau gave Washburn a 2-0 lead after the first inning of game two. Travis Ice singled home David Wade in the fourth inning to give the Ichabods a 3-0 lead. Wade made it 4-0 in the sixth with a solo home run to left center and Simoneau finished off the scoring with an RBI double in the seventh.

Starter Dustin Holthaus (6-4) tossed a complete game one-hitter to earn the win for the 'Bods. He held the Bearcats hitless for six innings before surrendering a lead-off single in the seventh.

Kenny Brengle (1-6) took the loss for the Bearcats after allowing three runs on four hits in 3.2 innings.

Washburn came into the game needing to sweep the doubleheader to qualify for the MIAA tournament. NWMSU and the 'Bods finish with identical 18-20 conference marks, but by virtue of a 3-1 series advantage the Bearcats advance to the MIAA tournament.
