Balanced effort leads Lady Blues to comeback over Mavericks

TOPEKA, Kan. - Five different Lady Blues had eight kills or more as they overcame a 1-0 deficit for a 3-1 (21-25, 27-25, 25-11, 25-17) win over Nebraska Omaha Saturday evening in Lee Arena.

The fifth-ranked Lady Blues won their 13th straight match and improved to 20-1. Head coach Chris Herron will go for his 300th win when Washburn travels to Fort Hays State Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match.

Mollie Lacy led Washburn with 14 kills and she hit .444 with one error in 27 attacks. Jessica Fey had 12 kills with a .476 percentage and Hillary Hughes had a double-double with 10 kills and 19 digs.

Breanna Lewis totaled 13 kills and a team-high four blocks. Jessica Kopp and Korie Thompson had eight kills each.

Washburn hit .241 as a team. Abby Wittman set 40 assists and Amanda Guess had 14.  Wittman added a double-double with 18 digs.

The Washburn back row kept busy, digging up 95 of the Mavericks' 177 attacks. Kelsey Lewis led the Lady Blues with a career-high 25 digs.

The Mavericks hit .241 in the opening set but then hit under .200 the rest of the way to finish with a .141 attack percentage. The Lady Blues were out-hit in the first two sets before breaking through for a .270 percentage in the third set and a .452 attack in the fourth and deciding set.

The Lady Blues used an 11-1 run midway through the third set to go up, 19-7. UNO later got to double digits on a WU service error but a UNO service error ended the set for Washburn.

The Lady Blues were down by a point in the fourth set before they went on an 11-1 run to take a 22-14 lead. A kill from Hughes got Washburn to match point and then a kill from Lacy ended it.

Natalie Ebke led the Mavs with 18 kills and had a double-double with 11 digs. Five players reached double figures in digs with Angie Reicks leading with 18.
