SAN ANGELO, Texas -- The Washburn Lady Blues opened the 2011 season with a pair of losses at the Angelo State Blue and Gold Classic. The Lady Blues will be back in action on Sunday with a pair of games against the same two teams.

The Lady Blues fell behind 3-0 after two innings and could not recover as they dropped their season opener 4-1 to Texas-Permian Basin. Washburn scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning when junior leftfielder Kacy Covert led off the inning with a single and then swiped second. She scored on a single to left by Shelby Erickson. Kelsie Novotny struck out six in the loss allowing three earned runs with no walks.Freshman catcher Hilary Weatherford had a hit as well.

Angelo State beoke open a 5-0 game with four runs in the sixth inning leading to the 9-0 win. The Lady Blues stranded seven in the game as Shelby Erickson had three of Washburn's five hits. Alex Zordel and Lauren Himpel picked up the other hits for the Lady Blues. Danielle Fox striking out nine scattering 12 hits.
