Up First . . .
The Washburn Lady Blues will return to action this week at the Southeastern Oklahoma State South Central Shootout featuring 16 teams from the MIAA, Heartland and Lone Star Conferences. The Lady Blues are looking for their first wins of the season after dropping all four of their games at the Angelo State Blue and Gold Classic last weekend in the first action of the 2011 season.
In the dugout . . .
Lisa Carey, the all-time winingest coach at Washburn, is in her ninth season in the Lady Blues' dugout. She was named the program's 13th coach Aug. 14, 2002 and has recorded a 237-195 (.563) mark during her Washburn tenure. The former University of Oklahoma three-time All-American and National Champion has led the Lady Blues to two of the three NCAA Division II tournament appearances in school history making the trips in two of the last five seasons. She has led the Lady Blues to two of the three NCAA appearances in school history. In eight seasons at the helm of the program, she has coached 52 Lady Blues to all-MIAA honors, seven all-region team selections, the 2007 MIAA Freshman of the Year, the 2009 MIAA Most Valuable Player, 49 MIAA Academic Honor Roll award winners as well as an ESPN The Magazine Academic all-district selection.
A look at the opponents . . .
Washburn will take on six different teams this weekend at the South Central Shootout starting with Abilene Christian on Friday at noon followed by fellow Lone Star Conference member Cameron at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Washburn will take on Heartland Conference members Texas A&M-International at noon followed by Newman at 2 p.m. Washburn will wrap up the event with Lone Star Conference foe and host school Southeastern Oklahoma State at 10 a.m. on Sunday followed by LSC member Northeastern State at 2 p.m.
Abilene Christian is 4-4 this season and has won its last two games. Cameron is 1-7 droping its last five contest. Texas A&M-International is 5-7 this season and Newman is 0-2 so far this year. Southeastern Oklahoma is 4-3 while Northeastern State is 0-2 dropping a pair of games to Northwest Missouri.
Who's on deck? . . .
Following this weekend's action in Durant, Washburn will travel to Canyon, Texas for action in the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Invitational in a triangular event with Eastern New Mexico also taking part. The Lady Buffs were ranked No. 7 in the latest NFCA top 25 coaches poll.

Texas-Permian Basin 4, Washburn 1
The Lady Blues fell behind 3-0 after two innings and could not recover as they dropped their season opener 4-1 to Texas-Permian Basin. Washburn scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning when junior left fielder
Kacy Covert led off the inning with a single and then swiped second. She scored on a single to left by
Shelby Erickson.
Kelsie Novotny struck out six in the loss allowing three earned runs with no walks.Freshman catcher
Hilary Weatherford had a hit as well.
Angelo State 9, Washburn 0 (six innings)
Angelo State broke open a 5-0 game with four runs in the sixth inning leading to the 9-0 win. The Lady Blues stranded seven in the game as
Shelby Erickson had three of Washburn's five hits.
Alex Zordel and
Lauren Himpel picked up the other hits for the Lady Blues.
Danielle Fox striking out nine scattering 12 hits.
Feb. 13 at ASU Blue and Gold Classic
Texas-Permian Basin 1, Washburn 0
The Lady Blues gave up a solo run in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 1-0 loss to Texas-Permian Basin. Washburn's
Danielle Fox (0-2) struck out six in the game scattering four hits.
Lauren Himpel,
Katie Schroeder,
Shelby Erickson and
Marissa Martin each had singles in the game. Washburn stranded seven runners in the game.
Angelo State 13, Washburn 3 (five innings)
For the second straight day, ASU used a big inning to pull away from the Lady Blues using a seven-run fourth inning sending the Rambelles to a 13-3 win. The Lady Blues cut an early ASU lead to 4-1 in the second inning after
Marisa Tetuan drove in
Lindsey Moore on a single to right. The Lady Blues added two more in the fifth inning Martin scored on a passed ball and Schroeder scored on a single by
Alex Zordel.
Kelsie Novotny allowed five earned runs.
