Up First . . .

Washburn returns to action at the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs Invitational in Canyon, Texas March 4-5 where they will take on the host Lady Buffs and the Eastern New Mexico Zias on both days of play. Washburn (3-7) has been off since going 3-3 at the Southeastern Oklahoma State South Central Shootout.

In the dugout . . .
Lisa Carey, the all-time winingest coach at Washburn, is in her ninth season in the Lady Blues' dugout. She was named the program's 13th coach Aug. 14, 2002 and has recorded a 240-198 (.563) mark during her Washburn tenure.  The former University of Oklahoma three-time All-American and National Champion has led the Lady Blues to two of the three NCAA Division II tournament appearances in school history making the trips in two of the last five seasons. She has led the Lady Blues to two of the three NCAA appearances in school history. In eight seasons at the helm of the program, she has coached 52 Lady Blues to all-MIAA honors, seven all-region team selections, the 2007 MIAA Freshman of the Year, the 2009 MIAA Most Valuable Player, 49 MIAA Academic Honor Roll award winners as well as an ESPN The Magazine Academic all-district selection.

A look at the opponents . . .
West Texas A&M is 9-1 ranked No. 7 in the latest NFCA top 25 poll entering weekend play at its own triangular hosting Texas A&M-International and Central Oklahoma.
Eastern New Mexico will play Feb. 25-26 at the UT-Permain Basin Invitational entering the four games with a 2-8 record.

Who's on deck? . . .
The Lady Blues are scheduled March 18-20 at the MIAA Crossover Tournament in Springfield, Mo., hosted by Southwest Baptist. The Lady Blues will take on Southwest Baptist, Central Missouri, Missouri Southern, Pittsburg State, Emporia State and Lincoln in the three-day event which will count for regional games only not impacting the MIAA standings.

Feb. 18-20 at SOSU South Central Shootout
Feb. 18 - Abilene Christian 5, Washburn 4
The Lady Blues took a 2-0 lead after two innings after Lindsey Moore led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Jacque Horejsi. Britny Cushing connected on her first home run of the season staking Washburn to the early lead. ACU scored one in the third and took a 3-2 lead after 3 and 1/2 innings. Washburn regained the lead with a two-run fourth inning after Shelby Erickson picked up an RBI single and Lauren Himpel scored on a an error. The Wildcats took the lead for good scoring a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Danielle Fox took the loss for the Lady Blues in the circle striking out eight allowing only one earned run as three errors led to four runs for ACU. Katie Schroeder was 3 for 4 and Alex Zordel, Moore and Cushing each had two hits for Washburn. Cushing also scored two runs. The Lady Blues stranded nine base runners in the game.
Feb. 18 - Washburn 3, Cameron 0
The Lady Blues won their first game of the season in a 3-0 win over Cameron behind a complete-game shutout by Kelsie Novotny who scattered six hits in the win. The Lady Blues got on the board in the bottom of the second Jacque Horejsi singled to right driving in Jessie McGown. In the third, Marissa Martin scored on a single by Shelby Erickson and Alex Zordel connected on a solo home run in the fifth inning for the final Washburn run of the game.
Feb. 19 - Texas A&M-International 2, Washburn 1
Washburn took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third after Jacque Horejsi scored on a single by Katie Schroeder. The Dust Devils tied the score in the bottom of the frame on a home run by Victoria Beltran. Texas A&M-International won the game in the bottom of the seventh on a walk off home run by Beltran who hit her second home run of the day. Alex Zordel had two hits to lead the Lady Blues while Danielle Fox (0-4) took the loss in the circle.
Feb. 19 - Washburn 7, Newman 0
Kelsie Novotny tossed the first Washburn no-hitter since Kelly Swygert tossed on against Southwest Baptist on March 28, 2007 in a 7-0 win over Newman. Washburn took advantage of eight Jet errors in the win. Novotny struck out two while getting 11 ground ball outs. Washburn scored two runs in the first inning with RBI singles by Shelby Erickson, who later scored on an error. The Lady Blues added one more in the bottom of the second when Marissa Martin scored on another error by the Jets. In the fifth, Washburn scored a solo run when Alex Zordel scored on an error by the centerfielder. In the sixth inning, Washburn scored three runs Lindsey Moore scored while Jessie McGown singled sending Zordel home. Marisa Tetuan singled scoring Kacy Covert wrapping up the Lady Blues scoring.
Feb. 20 - Southeastern Oklahoma 2, Washburn 1 (8 innings)
Southeastern Oklahoma scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second before the Lady Blues (3-7) tied the score in the top of the sixth when Katie Schroeder scored on an error by SOSU. Neither team scored in the seventh inning before the teams went to the international tie-breaker rule in the eighth inning scoring the game-winning run. Novotny started the game allowing eight hits with three strikeouts before passing the ball to Fox, who pitched 2 and 1/3 innings before yielding the unearned run. Kacy Covert had two hits for the Lady Blues who finished with four in the game stranding seven overall.
Feb. 20 - Washburn 11, Northeastern State 0 (5 innings)
Danielle Fox tossed Washburn's second no-htter in as many days following Novotny's no-no against Newman from the day before for her first collegiate victory. Fox struck out seven in the win. Washburn pounded out a season-high 15 hits with 11 runs highlighted by Jacque Horejsi's second inning grand slam sending the Lady Blues to a six-run third inning. Covert, Schroeder, Shelby Erickson, Alex Zordel, Horejsi and Lauren Himpel each had two hits in the game and Schroeder had two RBI. Lauren Himpel also swiped two bases as well.
