Washburn sweeps Truman, clinches spot in MIAA softball tournament

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues swept a doubleheader from Truman State coming from behind in both games winning 4-3 and 7-4 punching their ticket for the MIAA Softball Tournament beginning next week in Overland Park, Kan.

In the first game, the Lady Blues scored in their final bat when Lauren Himpel drove in Lindsey Himpel with a double to right giving Washburn the 4-3 win. Britny Cushing led off the inning with a double to right giving away to Lindsey Himpel as a pinch runner. Lindsey Moore moved Himpel to third witha sac bunt setting up the game-winning RBI.

Washburn trailed early as the Bulldogs scored when Amanda Perry doubled sending home Bridget Schade who doubled to lead off the second inning. The Lady Blues came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame when Katie Schroeder picked up an RBI single scoring Marissa Martin, who recorded an RBI single earlier in the inning scoring Lauren Himpel who got the inning started with a single down the left field line.

Truman took the lead in the fifth inning score two runs on RBI singles by Mary Manley and Christine Ulses.

Kacy Covert was 4 for 4 in the game while Lauren Himpel was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Marissa Martin was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Kelsie Novotny (9-12) pitched 2 and 1/3 innings for the win allowing one hit. Ashley Rotkvich (6-10) took the loss.

In the second game Washburn again fell behind early after the Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the first. Washburn scored a solo run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead in half when Shelby Erickson doubled to center scoring Lauren Himpel.

Truman regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Washburn took advantage of a Bulldog error with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning to score four unearned runs.Schroeder had a 2 RBI single scoring both Covert and Erickson. Alex Zordel followed with a home run to center driving in Schroeder putting Washburn up 5-4.

Washburn added two runs in the sixth inning after Erickson led off the inning with a double to right and then scored on Horejsi's doubled to left. Schroeder singled to left driving in Horejsi staking the Lady Blues to a 7-4 lead.

Erickson finished the game 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Schroeder drove in three runs and Zordel drove in two. Kelsie Novotny (10-12) picked up the win while Beth Schnurbusch (8-8) took the loss. Novotny struck out six without allowing a walk scattering nine hits.
