DURANT, Okla. -- The Washburn Lady Blues opened the 2012 season under first-year head coach
Vanessa Becerra going 1-2 on the first day of action wrapping up the day with a heartbreaking extra inning loss. The weekend schedule was shifted as rain was forecasted in the area. Washburn will continue action on Saturday.
Game 1 - Texas Permain Basin 5, Washburn 1
The Falcons scored solo runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings leading to the 5-1 win over the Lady Blues pounding out 13 hits in the win. Washburn's lone run came on a sac fly by
Paige Hightower in the fifth inning scoring
Britny Cushing.
Alex Zordel had a pair of hits in the opener.
Lindsey Moore (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Lady Blues stirking out three.
Game 2 - Washburn 10, Northeastern State 4
Washburn used the long ball cashing in on home runs by
Lindsey Moore and
Kristen Bell's first collegiate home run leading to a 10-4 win over the future MIAA foe.
Kayla Oldham (1-0) picked up her first win in her first appearance going the distance stirking out six allowing two earned runs. Washburn scored two in the second frame on Bell's home run scoring
Shelby Erickson who led off the inning with a walk. In the third, Moore connected on her first home run of the season - a three run shot which scored
Katie Schroeder and
Alex Zordel who each singled prior to Moore's blast. Washburn added three runs in the sixth inning as Oldham singled scoring Bell. Zordel drew a walk forcing in
Mallorie Monhollon who pinch ran for Oldham. Washburn added one more in the seventh inning on a single by
Haley Heincker scoring
Cori Munoz who singled earlier in the inning.
Game 3 - Southeastern Oklahoma 5, Washburn 4 (8 innings)
Washburn held a 3-1 lead after three innings but let it slip away falling 5-4 in eight innings to the host squad Savage Storm. Only three of the five runs in the loss given up by Lady Blues pitchers were earned. Washburn jumped on the board in the third inning with an RBI double by
Katie Schroeder scoring
Kacy Covert. Schroeder would later score on an illegal pitch and
Lindsey Moore would score the third run of the inning. SOSU scored a run in the fourth to cut into Washburn's lead on an unearned solo run in the frame. SOSU added another run in the fifth inning tying the score at 3. In the sixth inning, Washburn regained the lead when
Britny Cushing drew a bases loaded walk scoring
Erin Macaronas who pinch ran ealier in the inning. SOSU tied the score in the sixth and neither team scored in the seventh. Using the international tiebreaker, the lady Blues came up empty and SOU scored an unearned run wrapping up the game and the 5-4 victory.
