HAYS, Kan. -- Washburn overcame a three-run first inning deficit in the first game Tuesday at Fort Hays State but couldn't do the same in the second game as the two teams split a doubleheader. In a high-powered offensive battle, the Ichabods won the opener 12-6 and then dropped the second game 9-6.

The Ichabods moved their winning streak to six games with the early win and with the loss in the finale, they've now won nine of their last 11 games. They improved to 13-8 overall and 9-5 in the MIAA. The Tigers are now 10-12 and 8-9 in the league.

The Ichabods were down 3-0 in the first game before recording an out. They got them all back and then some with five runs in the fourth. Marcus Peavler hit a three-run triple and then scored when Josh Wilder singled. Wilder then scored on Connor Crimmins' double after the right fielder misplayed the ball.

The Tigers got one back in the bottom of the fourth to make Washburn's lead 5-4 and the Ichabods answered with four runs in the fifth to go up 9-4. Tyler Bean hit a two-run home run and Peavler later hit a two-run double to give him five RBI in the game.

The Ichabods added three more runs down the stretch to push them into double figures for the fourth time this year. They had 15 hits with seven of them going for extra bases, including five doubles. Bean, Alberts and Peavler each had three hits.

Eric Schmid started for Washburn and earned the win after settling down after a rough first inning. He worked 5 2/3 innings and ended up allowing six runs off nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks to improve his record to 1-1. Seth Huninghake worked the final 1 1/3 innings and didn't allow a hit or a run.

The Tigers put up three runs in the first and after scoring three more in the second, the Ichabods played from behind the entire game. Alberts hit a three-run homer, his fourth of the year, to put Washburn on the board in the fourth.

The Ichabods got two more in the seventh off Tyler Bean's team-leading seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot to left. They got one more in the eighth to pull within two runs but the Tigers added one more in the bottom of the eighth and then Washburn went down in order in the ninth.

Xavier Lewis started for Washburn and gave up the loss. He allowed six runs off seven hits through 1 2/3 innings.
