OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues went 1-1 on the first day of the MIAA Tournament and will face Missouri Western at 11 a.m. in an elimination game. Washburn (19-23) dropped its opener 5-2 to Central Missouri before topping Lincoln 8-3.
In the opener, the Lady Blues fell behind 1-0 after the first inning after the Jennies scored in their first at bat. However Washburn tied the score in the top of the fourth on
Leah Garland's first career home run knotting the score at 1-1.
In their next at bat, the Jennies scored three runs and added one more in the top of the fifth to put their lead to 5-1. Washburn scored a solo run in the top of the seventh on a single by
Alex Zordel scoring
Lindsey Moore who doubled in the inning, but Washburn would get no closer in the 5-2 loss.
Moore had three hits and Zordel added two more.
Kayla Oldham (10-11) took the loss striking out four.
In the second game of the night, the Lady Blues again fell behind 1-0 after the Blue Tigers scored one run in their first at bat and neither team would score until the Washburn scored four runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth leading to the 8-3 win.
In the fourth inning, Washburn scored first with an RBI single by
Mallorie Monhollon and then the Lady Blues took advantage of a pair of Blue Tiger errors. Later in the inning Zordel singled down the line to pick up an RBI.
In the fifth,
Britny Cushing hit her third home run of the season for a 5-1 Washburn lead. The Lady Blues added three more in the sixth including three on back-to-back home runs. Zordel hit a two-run homer and
Shelby Erickson followed that with a solo home run of her own.
Katie Schroeder recorded three hits and Zordel drove in three recording two hits. Eight of the nine batters in the Washburn line up scored for the Lady Blues. Moore (7-10) picked up the win allowing two earned runs.
