Leading Off
The Ichabods will play six home games this week to wrap up a 10-game home stand as head coach Steve Anson looks for his 800th win in the Washburn dugout.

Anson needs four more wins to reach the milestone. Tuesday the Ichabods (16-13, 12-10 MIAA) will play a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Fort Hays State at Falley Field and this weekend the Ichabods will play four games against Lincoln. Friday they'll play a single game at 4 p.m. and Saturday they'll play a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Sunday they'll play a game at noon to wrap up the series.

Washburn moved from a three-way tie for fifth in the MIAA to all alone in fourth by winning three out of four last weekend against Missouri Southern. Washburn improved to 9-2 at home.

The Tigers swept four games against Pittsburg State to get their overall record to 15-15 and push themselves to 13-12 in the MIAA. Washburn and FHSU split a doubleheader March 27 in Hays earlier this year.

Lincoln is 3-26 this year and last in the MIAA at 3-18 after getting swept by Central Missouri last weekend.

The Series Records
Fort Hays State holds a 92-66 lead in the all-time series record against Washburn after the two split a doubleheader earlier this year. They split their four-game series last year. The series began in 1966 and the two have played at least once a year since 1979.

Washburn is 11-8 all-time against Lincoln. The Ichabods took three of four last year in their first meetings since 2002.

Head Coach Steve Anson now four games from 800 at Washburn
Washburn head coach Steve Anson coached his 1500th game at Washburn in the season finale last year and now in 2012, his 33rd season at Washburn, he's four wins shy of 800 wins. Anson, the winningest coach in the MIAA, is 796-730-3 (.518) in 33 seasons at Washburn and 819-752-3 (.522) in 34 seasons overall as a head coach.

Anson entered 2012 with the 10th highest win total among active NCAA Division II coaches with 803. That's the highest among MIAA coaches. Among coaches all-time, he's 27th in career wins.

Last Time Out For Washburn
TOPEKA, Kan. -- Rain delayed the start of Saturday's doubleheader with Missouri Southern 90 minutes and the Ichabods offense didn't pick up until the second game as they split the twin bill with the Lions. MSSU won the first game 14-0 and Washburn took the second game 11-10 with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth.

After giving up three runs in the top of the ninth in game two to let the Lions tie the score at 10-10, Blake Hageman led off the bottom of the ninth with a double. Richard Swan then hit the first pitch to left field to drive in Hageman and end the game.

Washburn had gone up 10-7 after the seventh inning. Brad Alberts hit a two-run home run in the sixth to break a 6-6 tie. Swan's sacrifice bunt in the seventh drove in Marcus Peavler to put Washburn ahead and an RBI single from John Calhoun gave Washburn the 10-7 lead.

Alberts, who started as designated hitter, came in to pitch in the eighth inning. He worked into the ninth but gave up three runs to allow the Lions to tie it. Mark Biesma took the mound and got the final out in the ninth and earned the win after Swan's game-winning hit. Biesma improved to 2-2 after recording the five-pitch out.

Washburn had 15 hits in the second game with Peavler going 4 for 5 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.  Alberts, Matthews and Hageman each had two hits.

Matthews had Washburn's lone hit in the opener, a two-out single to left center in the second inning. Missouri Southern starter David Reese went the distance and walked none. He hit two batters and Washburn left four on base.

Reese got plenty of help from his offense. Sam Ryan hit two three-run home runs and ended up with seven RBI. The Lions scored three in the third off three hits and then took advantage of poor Washburn pitching in the fourth. Three Washburn pitchers combined to walk seven batters and hit one. The Lions got six runs in the inning and then got three more in the fifth off three hits.

Reese (4-2) threw a one-hit shutout and struck out three. Tyler Bean (3-2) took the loss for Washburn after allowing eight runs through 3 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits and walked five.

Ryan hit one more home run for MSSU in the second game to give him three on the day.

Done in a jiffy
The Ichabods set a school record since single-game statistics were first archived in 1999 by playing a 57-minute game April 6 against Missouri Southern. WU starter Brett Ash threw 58 pitches and gave up three hits and no walks in the 3-0 win. MSSU starter Cody Griebling threw 58 pitches in the loss. Both threw complete games. There were three double plays and only three runners left on base between the two teams.

Ichabods end 10-game home stand this week at friendly Falley Field
The Ichabods are 9-2 at home this year and they will hope to continue those winning ways as they wrap up a 10-game home stand this week with Fort Hays State and Lincoln.

The Ichabods lost their home opener February 29 to Rockhurst but have since won nine of 10. They bat .318 at home and keep opponents to a .277 average. Brad Alberts is batting .419 (13 for 31) at home with two of Washburn's four Falley Field home runs. John Calhoun hits .395 (17 for 43) at home with nine RBI.

Despite Washburn's dominance at home, the Ichabods have hit just four of their 28 home runs at Falley Field just year. Opponents have also hit four out of the park.

Washburn moves up to fourth in MIAA standings
The Ichabods moved from a three-way tie for fifth to all alone in fourth in the MIAA standings after winning three of four games last week. At 12-10, Washburn can catch No. 2 Emporia State (15-7) and No. 3 Missouri Western (14-8) this week.

Last time against FHSU
HAYS, Kan. -- Washburn overcame a three-run first inning deficit in the first game March 27 at Fort Hays State but couldn't do the same in the second game as the two teams split a doubleheader. In a high-powered offensive battle, the Ichabods won the opener 12-6 and then dropped the second game 9-6.

The Ichabods were down 3-0 in the first game before recording an out. They got them all back and then some with five runs in the fourth. Marcus Peavler hit a three-run triple and then scored when Josh Wilder singled. Wilder then scored on Connor Crimmins' double after the right fielder misplayed the ball.

The Tigers got one back in the bottom of the fourth to make Washburn's lead 5-4 and the Ichabods answered with four runs in the fifth to go up 9-4. Tyler Bean hit a two-run home run and Peavler later hit a two-run double to give him five RBI in the game.

The Ichabods added three more runs down the stretch to push them into double figures for the fourth time this year. They had 15 hits with seven of them going for extra bases, including five doubles. Bean, Alberts and Peavler each had three hits.

Eric Schmid started for Washburn and earned the win after settling down after a rough first inning. He worked 5 2/3 innings and ended up allowing six runs off nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks to improve his record to 1-1. Seth Huninghake worked the final 1 1/3 innings and didn't allow a hit or a run.

The Tigers put up three runs in the first and after scoring three more in the second, the Ichabods played from behind the entire game. Alberts hit a three-run homer, his fourth of the year, to put Washburn on the board in the fourth.

The Ichabods got two more in the seventh off Tyler Bean's team-leading seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot to left. They got one more in the eighth to pull within two runs but the Tigers added one more in the bottom of the eighth and then Washburn went down in order in the ninth.

Season Flashbacks: Don't Forget...

The Ichabods also went on a six-game winning streak and it was their biggest streak since winning seven straight in 2006. Washburn's last four-game sweep was March 20 and 21 at home against Northwest Missouri.
Schachenmeyer earns MIAA pitcher of the week honor: Washburn senior pitcher Kerry Schachenmeyer was named the MIAA pitcher of the week after throwing a shutout March 24 against SBU. Schachenmeyer shared the pitching award with Fort Hays State's Shawn Lewick. Schachenmeyer pitched a complete-game shutout as Washburn won 11-0 against Southwest Baptist as part of a four-game sweep. He allowed just three hits and struck out four. In the fourth inning, he allowed a single and then walked two to load the bases. He got the next batter to fly out to end the inning and leave all three on base. He allowed just one batter the final three innings with a hit-by-pitch.
Shutout leads Ash to MIAA pitcher of the week honor: Junior pitcher Brett Ash threw a complete game shutout March 16 in Washburn's series opener at Truman to earn him MIAA pitcher of the week honor. Ash went nine innings against the Bulldogs and allowed six hits and a walk while striking out eight. He pitched out of a two-hit inning in the second and then in the fourth he allowed the bases to get loaded and got out of the inning with a strikeout. He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the complete game and shutout.
Ichabods update record books with offensive explosion: The Ichabods scored 17 runs and had 21 hits March 12 in the third game of their series at Pittsburg State. Since single-game records were kept in 1999, that's the sixth-highest hit total and the second-highest in an MIAA game. The Ichabods had 24 hits at Southwest Baptist on April 14, 2000. The six home runs Washburn hit was tied for the highest in school history. Washburn also hit six homers at SBU on April 14, 2006. He and Richard Swan became the first pair of Ichabods to each hit two homers in the same game since single-game records were kept in 1999.

Up Next For The Ichabods
The Ichabods will embark on an 11-game road trip that will nearly wrap up their regular season. The trip will start April 21-22 with four games at No. 5 Central Missouri and then on April 24 Washburn will play a single game at Rockhurst. The Ichabods will then play four at Northwest Missouri State, April 28-29, before playing a home-and-away series with Emporia State.

The two will play a doubleheader in Emporia on May 4 and then play two in Topeka on May 5 in what will be Senior Day for Washburn and the regular season finale.
