Seniors hit well to lead Lady Blues to win over Rockhurst

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Lady Blues won two easy sets and then came back in the third to sweep Rockhurst 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 Saturday morning in the second day of the Southwest Baptist Bearcat Bash. The seventh-ranked Lady Blues (7-0) will finish action Saturday at 5:30 against Northwestern Oklahoma State Univerisity.

Washburn's three senior attackers all hit over .400 and combined for 36 kills and 27 digs. Jessica Fey hit .571 with 13 kills and one error in 21 attempts. Hillary Hughes hit .440 with 15 kills and Jessica Kopp had eight kills and hit .412 in the match.

Washburn hit .246 as a team while the Hawks hit .101 as they suffered their first loss of the year (7-1). Hughes added 15 digs for a double-double as she led a defense that dug up 64 Rockhurst attacks while the Hawks had just 44 digs. Abby Wittman had 12 digs and set 24 assists for a double-double and Jessica Kopp had 11 digs. Gracie Petersen had 16 assists off the bench.

The Lady Blues cruised to easy wins in the first set and led 7-0 in  the third when the Hawks climbed back. They scored 5 of 6 to get within 8-5 and then a later 3-0 run made it 11-11. Washburn went back up by two but a 3-0 run put Rockhurst up 16-15. A 3-0 run later gave Washburn the lead at 20-19 with Kopp capping the run with a block and then a kill and then Washburn closed out the match with a 5-1 run. Kelsey Lewis had two of her six kills during that run including the clincher.

Rockhurst hit under .050 in the first two sets and then hit .214 in the third to keep it close. The Lady Blues hit over .225 in all three sets. Both teams had eight blocks.
