Ichabods hold back Southwest Baptist blocking barrage to earn 13th straight win

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Leanna Willer had 13 kills and 13 digs and Washburn survived 16 blocks by Southwest Baptist in a 25-16, 25-12, 25-21 win Friday night at Schendel Court at Lee Arena.

The win, Washburn's 13th straight, set up a showdown of the MIAA's two remaining undefeated teams as fourth-ranked Central Missouri will play at Washburn Saturday at 3 p.m. Washburn will enter the match with a 20-3 record and 7-0 mark in the MIAA while UCM is 21-0 and also 7-0 in the league.

Southwest Baptist was held to just a .015 attack percentage and was hitting negative through the first two sets. The Ichabods hit just .177 as a team as 16 of their attacks were blocked by the Bearcats.

Hannah Frierdich, Corrinne Stringer and Sarah Vicory each had nine kills and Frierdich led Washburn with a hand on five of the team's six blocks.

Four total Ichabods had double-figure digs as Kelsey Lewis had 23, Abby Wittman had 18 and Courtney Churchman had 12. Wittman had a double-double with 37 assists.

Washburn pulled away early in the each of the first two sets, leading 8-3 in the first set and 14-4 in the second set. Lewis served during an eight-point run for Washburn in the second set and had three aces during the run.

The third set was played much closer. Southwest Baptist went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 8-8. Washburn pulled ahead after that but the Bearcats clawed back and were within a point a 16-15 after two straight points.

Vicory and Stringer had two kills during a 3-0 run after that and Washburn later led 21-16. The Bearcats made a final run by scoring five of six straight points but the Ichabods scored the last three to clinch the match. Korie Thompson started the run and then two straight Washburn blocks ended it. Frierdich was in on both of them and Cox had an assist on the clincher.

Jordan Nedbalek had 11 blocks for the Bearcats and McKinley Chesley had eight. Nikki Madoch led the team with nine kills.
