LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Washburn Ichabod basketball team trailed by three at the half and by as many as seven in the second half but rallied to pull out a 78-74 win over CSU-San Bernardino in its second of two game in Las Vegas. Washburn will have its home opener on Tuesday against Peru State at 7 p.m.
With the Ichabods (2-0) trailing by seven in the second half at 49-42 with 14:49 remaining in the game a 3-pointer by
Christian Ulsaker triggered a 11-4 Washburn run which tied the score with a free throw by
Chris Deanes with 10:18 to play at 53. The teams battled back and forth until a traditional 3-point play by Deanes put the Ichabods up for good as Washburn stretched its lead to six at 64-58 with 7:56 to play. The Coyotes (0-1) cut the lead to two, but the Ichabods again pushed the lead back to seven at 73-66 after a free throw by Deanes with 3:03 left.
However the Coyotes came back again and trimmed the margin to two with 18 seconds left at 76-74, but
Alex North hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds and the Coyotes missed two 3-pointers in the final eight seconds as the Ichabods improved to 2-0 on the season.
Kyle Wiggins led the Ichabods with 19 points pacing four Ichabods in double figures. Deanes had 16 points while North and
Jeff Reid each had 13. North added 13 rebounds for his third double double of his career. Reid finished with nine rebounds.
Lacy Haddock had 15 to lead the Coyotes.
Washburn outrebounded the Coyotes 43 to 42 with 10 offensive rebounds. Washburn forced the Coyotes into 15 turnovers leading to 16 points.
