Ichabods score six runs in eighth to win opener over Truman

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods jumped out to a 5-0 lead but ended up using a six-run eighth inning to win, 14-8 Saturday afternoon in their season opener over Truman. The two teams will wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Falley Field.

Junior transfer Taylor Herrington went 4 for 4 and scored four times with an RBI. Returning all-MIAA first baseman Brad Alberts was 3 for 4 and newcomers Dakota Kell and Kyle Carnahan joined him with three hits in the game. In total, Washburn put up 16 hits while the Bulldogs had 12.

Corey Anthony got the win after pitching three innings of relief. The junior transfer gave up two runs off four hits. Caesar Brown pitched the ninth inning to close the game. Freshman Dan Gabler got the start and pitched two scoreless innings before giving up six runs off seven hits. He struck out three Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs tied the score in the top of the eighth with a run but Parker Gibson led off the bottom of the eighth with a single then made his way around the bases on a sacrifice bunt, a balk and a wild pitch. There were three balks in the inning to help the Ichabod base runners. Dakota Kell, Richard Swan and Payton Soicher each had RBIs in the inning as the Ichabods built a solid lead.

Brown then worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to finish the game.

Washburn struck early as Herrington walked in the first inning in his only plate appearance that wasn't a hit then he later scored on a wild pitch. Brad Alberts then singled up the middle to drive in Connor Crimmins. The Ichabods then added three in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead after Herrington and Alberts had RBI singles and Crimmins had an RBI groundout.

The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the top of the third then Washburn added another in the bottom. Kell led off with a double and went to third on a grounder. He then scored after Kyle Carnahan was thrown out stealing second. Herrington tripled and scored in the fourth to give Washburn a 7-4 lead but the Bulldogs scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game.

Richard Swan drove in a go-ahead run in the seventh but Truman erased that in the eighth with one more before the Ichabods got six in the eighth to secure the win.

The Ichabods moved to 12-3 against Truman in home games in the last nine years.
