Ichabods let lead slip away late in second game as ESU sweeps doubleheader

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods jumped to a 4-0 lead in game two Saturday against Emporia State but gave up four late runs as the Hornets completed a sweep over Washburn at Falley Field. The Hornets won the opener 11-5 and took the second game, 8-5.

The Ichabods fell to 3-11 overall and 3-11 in the MIAA. They will head to Emporia Monday at 1 p.m. to complete the series as Sunday's game was moved due to cold and wet weather.

Washburn took a 4-0 lead in the second game off three runs in the first inning and one more in the second. Taylor Herrington started the first with a triple then scored on a single from Parker Gibson. Riley Price then singled and Brad Alberts walked to load the bases. Two of the runners scored when Gauntt was hit by a pitch and Connor Crimmins fouled out for a sacrifice fly. Price singled to drive in Payton Soicher in the second inning.

The Hornets answered with three runs in the top of the third inning off two hits and three errors and got another to tie it in the fourth.

Washburn went ahead in the sixth when Gibson singled and drove in Kyle Carnahan.

The Hornets then went ahead with three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth. The Ichabods left the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth then were retired in order in the ninth.

Drew Ridley started for Washburn and took the loss. He went the first 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs as he fell to 1-2.

Gibson was 4 for 4 in the game with two RBI. Price had two hits and had three in the first game as he went 5 for 8 in the two games.

The Ichabods trailed 11-1 going into the seventh and final inning of the opener. They scored four runs in the seventh but left the bases loaded for the final two outs to give Emporia State the win. Taylor Herrington had a two-run double and Riley Price had an RBI single. Richard Swan the walked with the bases loaded to drive in a run but Kevin Shaffer struck out the final two batters to earn a save.

Connor Crimmins and Riley Price were both 3 for 4 in the first game with an RBI and run scored each.

Brad Alberts (0-3) took the loss as he gave up seven runs over 4 and 2/3 innings. He gave up eight hits and struck out four. The Hornets led 4-1 before they scored six runs in the fifth inning to jump way ahead.
