Big 3rd inning not enough as Ichabods fall to Rockhurst

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods scored eight runs in the third inning but didn't score again in a 17-8 loss Wednesday evening to Rockhurst at Falley Field.

Washburn fell to 4-12 in its first non-conference game and will now play a three-game series with Central Missouri that has been moved to avoid upcoming wet weather. The two will play a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. at St. John Vianney High School in Kirkwood, Mo., and then they will play a game Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's High School in St. Louis, Mo. The series was scheduled to be played Saturday and Sunday in Warrensburg.

The Ichabods gave up five runs in the first inning and then trailed 10-0 when they batted in the bottom of the third. David Lammers led of the inning with a walk and then Corey Gragg had a single. Parker Gibson then walked to load the bases and Riley Price drove in the first run with a single. Brad Alberts was walked to drive in a run and Dakota Kell's hit by pitch also plated a run. Connor Crimmins later had a two-run double and Richard Swan drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. David Lammers ended the scoring in the inning with a home run to right field to get Washburn within two runs.

The two teams remained scoreless for three innings after that and then the Hawks (7-5) scored four in the seventh and three in the eighth to put the game away.

The Ichabods loaded the bases in the ninth with one out but couldn't score.

Dan Gabler (0-3) took the loss as he allowed the first eight runs off nine hits through just 1 1/3 innings. Eight other pitchers took the mound for Washburn with Eric Schmid showing the most command as he allowed just a hit through two innings.

Price ended the game 3 for 5 for Washburn and the Ichabods totaled nine hits while the Hawks pounded 21 of them. Washburn had five errors in the game.
