Leading Off...

Washburn will play its final MIAA road games this week then host the home finale this weekend. Just one game will remain on the schedule after that, a non-conference game at Rockhurst.

Washburn's three seniors will be honored during the LWU series. Richard Swan, Anthony Spicuglia and Brad Alberts will all play their final home games.

Swan set a school record Sunday with 3 doubles at UCO. Numerous players had hit 2 doubles in a game previously. Swan only had 1 extra-base hit, a double, this year before Sunday.

Taylor Gentry earned the victory in three of Washburn's last four wins. He's 3-1 this year with a 2.95 ERA in 9 total appearances.  He has a 35/12 strikeout/walk ratio after having 7 Sat. at UCO.

Riley Price is hitting .398 this year. He's hit safely in 29 of 37 games and is looking to become the first WU batter to hit over .400 since Wes Joy in 2007.

Washburn leads the MIAA with 19 triples, six more than second-ranked Pittsburg State. Taylor Herrington leads the league with 8 triples, the second highest total in school history.

Head coach Steve Anson coached his 1,600th career game on February 19 at Fort Hays State. He's gone 839-792-3 in 35 seasons with 34 at Washburn and one at Wayne State (Neb.).

WU leads the series with MWSU 57-54. MWSU took 2 earlier this year and has won 10 straight over Washburn.

WU and Lindenwood have never played.

Washburn's two losses Saturday at UCO came as the Bronchos scored in their final at-bats.

Ichabods head to MWSU Wednesday then host Lindenwood in home finale
The Ichabods will wrap up the MIAA portion of the schedule with five games  this week. They'll head to Missouri Western Wednesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader and then host a three-game series with Lindenwood this weekend at Falley Field. Saturday the two will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and they'll wrap up the series Sunday at noon. Washburn's three seniors will be honored prior to the game Sunday as they play their final home games as Ichabods.

The doubleheader with MWSU was originally scheduled for Tuesday but has been moved to avoid rain.

Washburn fell to 9-29 overall and 8-28 in the MIAA after getting swept at Central Oklahoma.

Missouri Western, ranked sixth in last week's Collegiate Baseball poll, lost two of three to No. 8 Central Missouri. The Griffons (32-7, 25-4 MIAA) are looking to wrap up the MIAA regular season title this week.

Lindenwood, new to the MIAA and NCAA II, is 19-22 overall and 17-16 in the league. The Ichabods have never played the Lions.

Gentry continues to impress in starting role
Junior pitcher Taylor Gentry has earned three of Washburn's last four wins. He went all six innings April 11 against Fort Hays State and gave up three runs off eight hits with six strikeouts. Overall, he has a 2.95 ERA with 35 strikeouts and 12 walks.

He also has wins in starts against Nebraska-Kearney and Northwest Missouri as he went seven innings in each game and allowed just one earned run.

Gentry was named the MIAA pitcher of the week earlier this year after pitching over five innings of scoreless relief March 23 as Washburn came back from a 6-2 deficit to beat the third-ranked Mules.

Strikeouts coming easy for Ichabods lately
The Washburn pitchers have thrown 42 strikeouts in the last five games to average 8.4 a game and 1.2 every inning.  Brad Alberts started the run by fanning nine in a win April 14 against Southwest Baptist. Connor Brady then became the first Ichabod since 2008 to throw at least 10 strikeouts as he got 11 in the second game that day against SBU. Taylor Gentry had seven Saturday at UCO and Mark Biesma had six.

Washburn has struck out at least seven batters in 14 games this year and has a 2.2 strikeout/walk ratio.

Head Coach Steve Anson in his 34th season at Washburn
Washburn head coach Steve Anson reached a career milestone with his 800th win as the Ichabods coach last year and he's in his 34th season at Washburn with an 813-790-3 (.514) record.

Anson, the winningest coach in the MIAA, is 839-792-3 (.514) in 35 seasons overall as a head coach after coaching the 1979 season at Wayne State (Neb.) and then starting at Washburn in 1980.

He was born in Mishawaka, Indiana, and is a 1976 graduate of Kansas State where he still holds the Wildcats' career record with 19 triples.

Last Time Out: Ichabods on losing end of slugfest to end series at Central Oklahoma; Swan sets doubles record
EDMOND, Okla. -- The Ichabods out-hit Central Oklahoma but couldn't overcome 10 unanswered runs in a 20-13 loss Sunday in the series finale at Central Oklahoma.
The Bronchos swept the series and dropped Washburn to 9-29 overall and 8-28 in the MIAA.

Washburn had 17 hits including a school-record three doubles by Richard Swan. The Broncos had 15 hits.

Washburn took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. Taylor Herrington led off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Parker Gibson. Washburn later loaded the bases and Richard Swan walked to drive in a run but Washburn left the bases loaded after that.

The Bronchos scored six runs in the bottom of the second and four more in the third to take a 10-2 lead.

The Ichabods were shut out in the second and third innings but scored runs every inning after that and were within three after scoring two in the top of the seventh. The Bronchos scored two in the bottom of the seventh and four in the eighth to put the game away.

Swan doubled in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings and finished with four RBI and two runs scored. Washburn had players get two doubles in a game 68 different times before Swan got three.

Gibson was 3 for 5 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Riley Price also went 3 for 5 at the plate with three RBI. He and Gibson each scored three times. Brad Alberts went 2 for 4 with two walks.

Drew Ridley gave up the first eight runs and fell to 1-5 on the year.

The Bronchos hit three home runs, including a grand slam in the third.

Coming Up Next
Washburn will wrap up the season next Wednesday with a 6 p.m. game at Rockhurst. The two teams were scheduled to play a three-game series earlier this year but had it snowed out. They did reschedule one of the games with the Hawks winning 17-8 on March 20.
