GOLDEN, Colo. -- Corrine Stringer had a pair of breakout games and
Abby Wittman had 93 assists as sixth-ranked Washburn won twice Saturday in the final day of the Colorado Mines Oredigger Volleyball Classic.
Washburn (6-2) beat Tarleton State 3-2 (25-16, 17-25, 26-24, 15-13) to end its first regular season losing streak of any length since 2006 and then swept Western Oregon (25-15, 25-20, 25-10). The Ichabods will begin MIAA action Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a match at Emporia State.
Stringer played in her first action since 2010 this weekend and had 13 kills against Tarleton State and 15 against Western Oregon. The All-America transfer hit .414 in the WOU match and added six digs.
She was one of three Ichabods to reach double figures in the match against Tarleton State.
Marissa Cox had 20 and
Leanna Willer had 12. Willer added 14 digs for a double-double.
Abby Wittman also had a double-double with 57 assists and 21 digs. That was her second straight match with over 50 assists and sixth straight double-double.
The match marked the first time Washburn played three straight five-set matches since the opening weekend of the 2003 season. Washburn had a 10-0 run midway through that set but then gave up eight of the next 10 points to let TSU back in it. A kill from Cox and then a block from
Rebecca Maasen and Stringer ended that set.
Washburn led 21-19 in the fourth set but lost six of the last seven points to go into a deciding set. That set was tied at 13-13 before Cox set down a kill and
Kelsey Lewis ended it with an ace.
Washburn only trailed once in the Western Oregon match, 3-0 in the second set. The Ichabods answered that with a 9-2 run and went on to win by five. Washburn started the third set on a 4-0 run and only allowed 10 points in the easy win.
Stringer had 15 kills and six digs and
Korie Thompson had 10 kills with a .318 attack percentage.
