Action continues with weekend series at UCO then pair of non-conference home games

Leading Off...

The Ichabods will look to extend their three-game winning streak as they play a four-game series this weekend at UCO.

They will then return home to host Newman on Tuesday and William Jewell on Wednesday.

Washburn is 15-19 all-time against UCO after getting swept in the series last year. WU is 18-17 against NU and 2-3 against WJC. WU and WJC have not played since 1977.

WU opened its season by taking 3 of 4 at Lindenwood last weekend. Its midweek game with Rockhurst was postponed.

Washburn's starters combined for a 1.96 ERA with 25 strikeouts and six walks in 23 innings. All four starters earned a no decision as the games were all decided late.

Gauntt led Washburn at the plate batting .500 (6 of 12). Johnson and Gibson led with 4 RBI each.

The Bods won G1 Saturday on a walk-off sac fly from Gibson and then they ended G2 with 7 runs in the 8th inn. to invoke the run rule.



Action continues with weekend series at Central Oklahoma then pair of non-conference home games
The Ichabods will take their three-game winning streak on the road as they face Central Oklahoma in a four-game MIAA series this weekend. Potential wet weather moved the series up a day and the two will now play a doubleheader Thursday at 12:30 p.m. and then single games Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

Washburn will then play its home opener Tuesday against Newman and then host William Jewell Wednesday. Both of those contests are 4 p.m. single games at Falley Field.

The Ichabods started their season with a 3-1 record at Lindenwood in an MIAA series that had to be moved from Topeka to St. Charles, Mo. Washburn then had its midweek game with Rockhurst postponed due to cold weather. Central Oklahoma is 6-2 after splitting a four-game series at Emporia State last weekend. The Bronchos are 3-0 at home.

Washburn's non-conference opponents will play multiple games before coming to Topeka. Newman is 6-5 and will play Emporia State this Wednesday and Lubbock Christian over the weekend. William Jewell will open its season with three games at St. Mary's (Texas) this weekend and then play at Benedictine Tuesday before coming to Topeka Wednesday.

Ichabods get four solid starts
Washburn's four starters last weekend at Lindenwood produced a 1.96 ERA with 25 strikeouts and just six walks in 23 innings. Brett Ash and Taylor Gentry combined to pitch 11 innings in the season-opening doubleheader and allow one unearned run off four hits. They struck out 14 and walked just two.

All four starters went at least five innings but they earned no-decisions after the games were decided in later innings. They gave up just two  extra-base hits with a pair of doubles.

Ash impressive in first action after year off from injury
Senior pitcher Brett Ash made his debut start after a year off from injury and allowed one unearned run off three hits with six strikeouts in Washburn's season opener against Lindenwood. He didn't walk any or allow an extra-base hit in the no-decision. He recorded nine straight outs in the final three innings he pitched.

Gauntt leads Ichabods at the plate in season-opening series
Catcher David Gauntt hit .500 (6 of 12) as he started all four games in Washburn's series win at Lindenwood to open the season. He had an .833 slugging percentage with two doubles and a triple and he drove in three and scored three times.

The Ichabods were tested on the base paths at Lindenwood and Gauntt threw out six of 17 base stealers.

About Central Oklahoma
Central Oklahoma has started its season 6-2 and is 2-2 in the MIAA after splitting a series at Emporia State. The Bronchos are led at the plate by Phillip Wilson with a .655 batting average, 13 RBI and five home runs. He's slugging 1.207 through his first 29 at-bats.Ricky Reeves is 2-0 on the mound with a 0.69 ERA and he's struck out 11 in 13 innings.

The Bronchos went 30-19 last year and were tied for third in the MIAA at 23-16.

About Newman
The Jets started the year 6-5. They have a game scheduled for Wednesday at Emporia State and a series with Lubbock Christian over the weekend before coming to Topeka. Newman went 21-25 last year and finished fifth in the heartland Conference at 16-19.

About William Jewell
The Cardinals will open their season with three games this weekend at St. Mary's (Texas) and then they'll play Tuesday at Benedictine before play Washburn on Wednesday. William Jewell went 19-29 last year and finished tied for sixth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division with a 13-23 record.

Keepin up with the changes
Washburn's first nine games on the schedule will not be played as scheduled. The season-opening series with Lindenwood February 21-23 was moved from Washburn to Lindenwood and the non-conference game February 25 with Rockhurst has been postponed. No makeup date has been scheduled.

Washburn's four-game series at Central Oklahoma this weekend has been moved up a day due to cold weather.

Up Next
Washburn will head to defending MIAA champion Missouri Western for a four-game series March 7-9. The Ichabods will then play a non-conference game with Emporia State on March 12 in Emporia.
