TOPEKA, Kan. – The Ichabods got 13 hits to win the nightcap 8-3 Friday at Falley Field against Fort Hays State after falling 7-5 in the opener of their home-opening doubleheader.
Â
The Ichabods, playing their latest home opener in recent history, moved to 8-7 on the year and 8-6 in the MIAA. The two teams will wrap up the series Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader and Sunday's single game has been canceled after they played two on Friday.
Â
Washburn broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth in the second game.
David Gauntt and
Connor Crimmins singled and then
Dakota Kell had a pinch hit single to drive in Gauntt. Kell then broke for second on a stolen base attempt and as the throw went toward the bag, Crimmins stole home to give Washburn a 5-3 win.
Â
Those two runs gave starter
Taylor Gentry his second win of the year (2-0). He gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits and he struck out seven.
Greg Mason then pitched the final three innings and earned his first save as the Tigers managed just one base runner on an infield hit in the seventh.
Â
Kell went 2 for 2 with two RBI and a run scored. Crimmins and
Wes Jones also each had two hits. Crimmins tripled and scored in the second as Washburn got on the board first.
Â
The Tigers (4-13, 3-11 MIAA) struck first in the opening game with two runs in the second and they led 5-0 after three innings. The Ichabods got two in the fourth as
Parker Gibson scored on a wild pitch and Crimmins had a sacrifice fly that scored
Matt Jackson.
Â
Fort Hays State added two runs in the seventh to go up 7-2 and Washburn's three runs in the bottom of the seventh weren't enough.
Taylor Herrington hit his first home run of the year with a solo shot to right center and then Jackson and Gauntt had RBI singles. Washburn later loaded the bases after an FHSU error but the Tigers got out of the inning to end a nine-game losing streak.
Â
Mark Biesma pitched all but the last two outs for Washburn and he took the loss (1-2) after giving up seven runs off 10 hits. He struck out four and walked one.
Â
Gauntt ended the first game 3 for 4 and Herrington and Jones each had two hits.
