Ichabods fall 9-5 in series opener at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Ichabods gave up six runs in the eighth inning as they fell 9-5 Friday night at Pittsburg State as the two opened a four-game MIAA series.
 
Washburn fell to 9-10 overall and 9-8 in the MIAA. The two will continue the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
Parker Gibson went 3 for 5 with a run scored and David Gauntt went 2 for 5 with a two-run single. Gauntt's RBI hit came during a three-run ninth as Washburn tried to erase a 9-2 deficit after allowing six runs to the Gorillas in the eighth. Wes Jones also drove in a run with a single in the ninth.
 
Mark Biesma pitched the first 7 1/3 innings and was pulled after the Gorillas got three singles early in the eighth inning. He allowed six runs, four of them earned, and struck out six with one walk. Greg Mason allowed three unearned runs as he pitched the final two outs of the eighth inning.
 
Washburn scored first in the game on an RBI single from Matt Jackson. The Ichabods then took a 2-1 run after an RBI double from Taylor Herrington. The Gorillas then scored eight unanswered runs with one each in the sixth and seventh and six in the eighth.
 
Each team finished with 12 hits and Pittsburg State had three errors while Washburn had two.
