PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Gorillas scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 13th inning to beat Washburn 5-4 Sunday afternoon in the final game of their MIAA series. Pittsburg State won the series three games to one.
Â
Washburn (10-12, 10-10 MIAA) will finish a six-game road trip Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Rockhurst.

The Gorillas got two on base in the 13th inning on a single and a hit batter. A sacrifice bunt then moved the runners to second and third and they both advanced on a wild pitch as ball four on an intentional walk got away to end the game.

The Ichabods fell behind 2-0 after the third inning and then took the lead as they scored all four of their runs in the fifth.
Cole Gardner drove in two runs with a double and then
Parker Gibson drove in two more with a single.

The Ichabods then got two hits in the sixth inning but were held hitless the final seven innings after that. Pitt State scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the seventh to tie the game.

Eric Schmid pitched the first 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs, three earned, off seven hits. He struck out seven and walked three.
Maustin Otterstatter pitched the final 5 2/3 innings and earned the loss (2-2). He allowed the winning run and seven hits and a walk.

The Gorillas nearly won the game in the ninth inning. They got three singles but had a runner throw out at third to end the inning. Neither team got a hit in the extra innings until PSU produced the winning run in the 13th.
The game was Washburn's longest extra-inning game since playing a pair of 14-inning games in 2008.
