Early runs in each game lead Ichabods and Hawks to doubleheader split

TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn scored 10 runs in the first two innings to beat Rockhurst 10-5 in the opener of a doubleheader Tuesday at Falley Field. The Hawks then scored 10 in the first three innings of the night cap to win that game 11-7.
 
The Ichabods moved to 17-15 overall and will now end the week with MIAA action at Nebraska-Kearney. That series moved up a day due to possible bad weather and will start with a game Thursday at 6 p.m. The two teams will play a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. and then wrap up the series Saturday at 12 p.m.
 
Washburn's first three batters in the bottom of the first of in game one reached and then David Gauntt hit a grand slam to left center to start a seven-run inning. Matt Jackson and Taylor Herrington had RBI singles in the inning and Connor Crimmins drove in a run on a grounder.
 
The Hawks scored two each in the first and second but Washburn added three more in the bottom of the second. Dakota Kell had an RBI single and Gauntt drove in his fifth run of the game with a double.
 
Both bullpens took over after that with the Hawks getting the only run in the final four and a half innings with an unearned tally in the seventh. Austin Strurgis, Connor Brady, Spencer Schwandt and AJ Green combined the throw just 24 pitches the final four innings for Washburn. They each worked one frame and allowed just a hit and a walk. Kenny McKee threw the first inning and got the win (1-0).
 
Gauntt batted 3 for 3 in the opener with two runs scored. Gibson and Kell each had two hits and two runs scored.
 
Rockhurst broke things open in the second game with six runs in the second inning and four in the third.
 
Aric Valencia and Corey Gragg had RBI singles in the fourth to get Washburn on the board and Riley Krane and Valencia had RBI grounders in the sixth as part of a three-run inning to get Washburn within six at 11-5.
 
Krane and Kyle Carnahan each had doubles in the bottom of the seventh as Washburn tried to mount a comeback. Rockhurst's reliever also balked twice in the inning and there was an error but it only produced two runs before a lineout from Corey Gragg ended the game.
 
Samuel Jones gave up the six-run second inning to take the loss and fall to 2-1. Gragg was the only Ichabod with multiple hits as he went 2 for 4.
 
The doubleheader had 33 runs scored, 43 hits, six errors and 21 pitchers between the two teams.
