EMPORIA, Kan. -- The No. 6/19 Washburn Ichabods drew a 2-2 series split with Emporia State winning the final game of the set 12-7 on Sunday in Emporia. The Ichabods will return to play at Newman on Wednesday.
The Ichabods (16-2, 10-2 MIAA) scored five runs in the first inning and would go on to score in seven of their nine innings overall. In the first,
Parker Gibson led off the game with a single and then his base hit was followed by singles by
Riley Krane and
Kyle Carnahan who drove in Gibson. After a walk by
David Gauntt,
Connor Crimmins drove in two more runs with a double to center and then
Tanner Triggs picked up an RBI with a ground out to first scoring Crimmins.Â
The Hornets (12-6, 6-5 MIAA) picked up a run in the bottom of the first before the Ichabods came back with one of their own in the second going back up 6-1 after two innings when Gibson scored.
Washburn picked up an unearned run in the third on an RBI single by
Tanner Johnson and then added another solo run in the fourth on a sac fly by Carnahan which scored Gibson who led off the inning with a triple to right field as Washburn went up 8-2.
A 2-run homer by
Corey Gragg in the fifth inning stretched the Ichabod lead to 10-2.
Washburn was held scoreless in the sixth inning but scoreda solo run in the seventh.
Gauntt led off the eighth inning with a solo home run and then the Hornets scored five runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the Ichabod lead to 12-7 to wrap up the scoring.
Eric Schmid (3-0) picked up the win pitching five innings striking out five allowing two earned runs scattering five hits.
Tanner Kilmer pitched two innings and
Greg Mason pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.
Gibson led the Ichabods with four hits and Krane and Crimmins each recorded three. Gibson also scored three times while Gauntt and Crimmins scored twice.
