TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods moved to 5-0 in the MIAA and 11-0 overall with an 11-7 win over Pittsburg State in the first game of a four-game set with Pittsburg State on Friday at Falley Field. Washburn will continue the series with two games on Saturday and wrap up the weekend with a single game on Sunday.
The 11-game winning streak by the Ichabods is the longest for any Washburn team since 1995 when that squad rolled off 11 wins.
Washburn fell behind 2-0 in the first inning to the Gorillas, but cut the lead in half when
Parker Gibson led off the bottom of the first with a home run. After a
Riley Krane triple to right center,
Kyle Carnahan singled scoring Krane from third tying the score at 2-2.
After a single by
Corey Gragg, Carnahan scored and then
Tanner Triggs scored stretching Washburn's lead to 4-2 after one inning of play.
In the third, Washburn added another run with
Tanner Johnson's single scoring Triggs.
The Gorillas picked up a solo run in the fourth inning trimming the Ichabod lead to 5-3 before the Ichabods came back with three runs going up 8-3 after
Connor Crimmins drove in two with a single to right and then later scored on a wild pitch.
Pitt State cut the lead to one at 8-7 after getting four runs on four hits in the fifth before the Ichabods came back again with three in the bottom of the fifth on another triple by Krane, a 2 RBI hit and then Crimmins picked up an RBI of his own pushing the Ichabods up 11-7.
Neither team would score the rest of the way as the Ichabods picked up their 11th straight win setting the school record for the best start to a season in school history.
Gibson and Krane each finished with three hits and three runs scored while Crimmins drove in three.
Tanner Kilmer (1-0) picked up the win pitching 3 and 2/3 innings striking out five and
Reed Morton came in the game and finished off the ninth with three strikeouts facing four batters
