KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods' rally came up 90-feet short as they fell 6-5 to Emporia State at the MIAA Baseball Tournament at Community America Ball Park. Washburn seasons ends at 33-20 after tying for first in the MIAA regular season.
The Hornets (38-14) scored five runs in the bottom of the first sending 10 batters to the plate taking the early lead.
In the second inning, Washburn put three on the board cutting the Hornet lead to 5-3.
Connor Crimmins led off the inning with a seingle and
Tanner Triggs followed with a single of his own. After a sac fly by
Tanner Johnson scoring Crimmins.
Parker Gibson recorded a 2-RBI double to left center scoring both Triggs and Gragg.
Tanner Kilmer who came in relief in the first inning and then retired the Hornets in order in the second, third and fourth innings - a stretch of 15 of 16 heading into the sixth inning.
In the fourth, Washburn cut the Hornet lead to 5-4 after
Payton Soicher scored on Gibson's single through the right side.
Neither team would score until a solo home run by Dean Long in the seventh stretching the Hornet lead to 6-4.
In the ninth inning, Gibson recorded his third hit of the day outrunning an infield hit to third base.
Riley Krane drew a walk and after
Kyle Carnahan was hit by a pitch,
David Gauntt reached on an error by the Hornets scoring Gibson. However a flyout and a strikeout ended the game with the bases loaded.
Gibson scored three times and had three hits to lead the Ichabods. Crimmins finished with two hits as the Ichabods finished with nine.
Dan Gabler took the loss on the mound allowing five runs and Kilmer pitched the remaining 7 2/3 innings scattering four hits and an earned run.
