Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – No. 9 Washburn opened the 2015 Steel & Silver Classic with a 3-0 victory against Adams State on Friday, Sept. 11 in a neutral site contest, before closing the night with a 3-1 win over host school UC-Colorado Springs. WU swept the match, 26-24, 25-23, 25-14, before taking the second game, 25-27, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19.
Washburn (6-0) returns to the court on Saturday, Sept. 12 for two games in Pueblo, Colo., taking on host school CSU-Pueblo at 12:30 p.m. CT (11:30 a.m. MT) and Western State at 5:30 p.m. CT (4:30 p.m. MT).

No. 9 Washburn 3, Adams State 0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-14)Close throughout, Washburn took advantage of two straight ASU errors to claim the first set, 26-24. The Ichabods led by four, 22-28, late in the set, but saw the Grizzlies charge back with a 6-2 run at tie it, 24-all. WU snagged the win, however, after a service error and an attack error.
Tied at 10-10 in the second set, a kill from
Taylor Selk helped the Ichabods on a 5-1 run that looked to be the push WU needed, but the Grizzlies once again clawed back into contention and tied it, 20-all. Washburn recovered, however, and took the set, 25-23, winning on a kill from
Paige Regnier.
Washburn started hot in the third set, racing out to a 6-0 lead thanks in part to two kills from Regnier in that span. The Ichabods continued to push, stretching the lead to eight (12-4) midway through the set. WU's largest lead of the match (12) came at 19-7, just before the Ichabods closed the win with a 25-14 victory in the third.
Regnier put together her first career double-digit kill performance, finishing the game with a team-high 11 kills and a .455 hitting percentage.
Leanna Willer just missing her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 kills, nine digs and five blocks in the match. Selk was third on the team with nine kills.
Willer and
Sarah Vicory (seven kills, five blocks) were second on the team in blocks behind
Carley Swan, who had seven. Libero
Alyssa Carney dug up 16 attacks to lead the Ichabod defense, while
Liz Powell paced Washburn with 28 assists.
No. 9 Washburn 3, UC-Colorado Springs 1 (25-27, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19)Trailing 10-9 in the first set,
Taylor Selk and
Sarah Vicory helped WU go on a 4-0 run that saw them take a brief three-point lead in the game (13-10). Selk started the quick rally with a kill, before the two combined for a block and Vicory had a kill of her own. An attack error from UCCS ended the scoreless run, and the Mountain Lions eventually climbed back to take a 16-15 lead just past the midway point.
That was part of a larger 7-1 that put UCCS in the lead, 19-17, but a kill from
Liz Powell and a
Tatiana Schafer service ace helped WU tie it again, 19-all. Though they rallied from 23-21 to take a set-point 24-23 lead, the Ichabods fell, 27-25, in the first.
The second set saw WU fall behind 16-11 midway through, but a 9-3 run helped the Ichabods charge back to a 20-19 lead.
Leanna Willer had two kills and two block assists in that run, propelling the Ichabods towards a 25-22 win that tied the match, 1-1.
Down 9-6 in the third, a kill from
Leanna Willer started a rally of six unanswered that helped them regain the lead for good. Though UCCS stayed close throughout, keeping things within three points throughout, Washburn held on and took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-11 victory.
Tied 3-3 in the fourth, Willer's 15th kill of the night sparked WU towards another 6-0 run, giving them a 9-3 lead early on. UCCS again closed the gap late, cutting WU's lead to three (21-18), before a 4-1 run from Washburn clinched the match, 25-19.
Willer led the team with her second 20-plus kill effort of the year, finishing with 22 kills and nine digs, adding four blocks.
Paige Regnier reached double digits for the second straight match, finishing second on the team with 12 kills.
Powell had seven kills to go with 47 assists and 17 digs, giving her a double-double for the fourth time this season.
Alyssa Carney (21 digs),
McKenzie Hartzog (12 digs) and
Korie Thompson (11 digs) also reached double digits in digs, while
Carley Swan led the team with five blocks at the net.
