Complete recaps from Saturday's action are below …
No. 9 Washburn 3, CSU-Pueblo 2 (22-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-14, 15-12)Trailing 8-7 in the early going of the first set, WU allowed a 6-0 CSU-Pueblo run that had the Ichabods on their heels, trailing 14-7. Washburn, however, slowly climbed back into contention and tied it, 18-18, after a kill from
McKenzie Hartzog. The teams battled to 20-all, when two straight for the Thunderwolves provided a gap that the Ichabods couldn't close, falling 25-22.
Out of the reset, Washburn opened the second set with a 5-2 lead, and though the Thunderwolves tied it at 5-all soon after, back-to-back kills from
Paige Regnier was part of four answered points for the Ichabods that pushed the lead up to 9-5 and forced a CSU-Pueblo timeout. After the pause, the scoreless run was stopped, but WU soon grew the lead to seven (15-8). The Ichabods' largest lead (nine) came at 21-12 and on set point, as WU tied the match with a 25-16 win.
WU built a 16-11 lead halfway through the third set, but a 5-0 rally from the Thunderwolves tied it, 16-all, before a kill from
Leanna Willer stopped the run. Still, CSU-Pueblo's scoring burst continued as Washburn dropped the third set, 25-21.
Up 5-4 in the fourth, another four-point burst for the Ichabods gave WU a five-point lead (9-4) early on. That was part of a larger 10-1 burst that gave the Ichabods a commanding 15-5 lead before a CSU-Pueblo timeout was called. WU's largest lead of the set (12), was 19-7, before tying the match for the second time, 2-2, with a 25-14 victory.
In the fifth and decisive set, WU got out to a 3-0 lead before a Thunderwolves timeout. From there, CSU-Pueblo stopped the shutout with a point, but saw WU grow the lead to four (6-2) soon after. Washburn led, 8-4, at the switch, and after a CSU-Pueblo kill brought the Thunderwolves within three (8-5), a kill from Willer sparked WU on another three-point burst towards an 11-5 lead. CSU-Pueblo charged back to within one (12-11), however, with a 5-1 lead before
Sarah Vicory's 10th kill of the set helped WU regain a two-point lead (13-11). That recovery was enough breathing room for the Ichabods to reset and close the match with a 15-12 win on Willer's 20th kill of the contest. It was the third five-set victory for Washburn this season.
Willer's 20 kills was a team-high and went alongside 13 digs and six blocks for her fourth double-double of the season. Regnier put together her third consecutive double-digit kills performance with 14, while Vicory finished with eight blocks alongside her 10 kills.
Taylor Selk just missed double-digits, finishing with nine on the day and five blocks, and
Carley Swan had seven blocks to sit second on the team at the net.
Liz Powell's 49 assists and 19 digs (second on the team) was good enough for a double-double in the second straight contest, while
Alyssa Carney again led the team in digs with 21.
Korie Thompson also hit the double-digit mark with 10 digs on the day.
No. 9 Washburn 3, Western State 0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-20)Washburn started hot with a 5-0 run to open the match, stretching the lead to seven (9-2) before a Western State timeout. Up 11-6, a kill from
Leanna Willer propelled WU towards a 7-1 run that gave them an 11-point lead (18-7), finishing the spurt with four unanswered. The Ichabods took the set, 25-15.
The Ichabods opened the second with a 4-1 lead, and though WSU came back to within one (5-4), a kill from
Sarah Vicory was the opening of a 6-0 run for the Ichabod that featured three kills from the junior middle hitter. Leading 11-4 at that point, a power outage in the arena stopped things for 25 minutes before a return to action. Later in the set, Western State tied it, 20-20, but a kill from Vicory ended a 5-0 Mountaineers' run and put WU back ahead by one (21-10). Down 22-21 soon after, Willer's sixth kill of the night started a final push for the Ichabods towards a 25-23 set win.
Down 5-4 early in the third, a WSU service error helped WU towards a quick three-point rally that gave them the lead for good, up 7-4. Leading by one (8-7),
Paige Regnier's sixth kill of the evening was the first of four straight from Washburn and part of a larger 6-1 run that gave the Ichabods a 14-8 advantage. WU remained in control throughout, closing the match, 25-20.
Vicory hit .522 in the match and led the team with 13 kills, adding a team-high four blocks. Willer had 10 kills and 10 digs for her second consecutive double-double, while
Paige Regnier finished the match with six kills.
Alyssa Carney led the team with 15 digs, ahead of
McKenzie Hartzog (11 digs) and Willer in the defensive category, while
Liz Powell had 32 assists.
