EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods will continue its 2016 season after receiving an invitation to participate in the 2016 Mineral Water Bowl on Dec. 3 in Tiger Stadium with kickoff scheduled for noon. Washburn will take on Bemidji State from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in the 51st edition of the bowl game.
"We are greatly honored and pleased and humbled by the Mineral Water Bowl to invite us to come play Bemidi State," Ichabod head coach
Craig Schurig said. "We have very fond memories of our trip there in 2004 and very much looking forward to coming back and playing another great game. It was such a great experience in 2004 and we're anxious to get back and we are very thankful for the opportunity and excited for our seniors who will get an extra game after putting in all the work in our program."
The Beavers were 8-3 this season and placed second in the north division and tied for third overall in the NSIC.
It will be Washburn's 12th postseason game appearance in program history and its sixth bowl game and the first since defeating Midwestern State in the 2010 Kanza Bowl in Topeka 45-14. Washburn also took part in the 1986 Aztech Bowl and the 2004 Mineral Water Bowl defeating Northern State 36-33. Washburn also defeated Millikin 21-7 int eh 1974 Boot Hill Bowl in Dodge City, Kan. and lost to Benedictine 29-14 in the 1976 Boot Hill Bowl.
The MIAA team playing in the game has won 10 of the 16 meetings since it became a bowl for Division II teams in 2000.
