Ichabods wrap up regular season with trip south on the Turnpike

  Opening Tip
•      The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up the regular season and look to secure a home MIAA Tournament first round game at Emporia State on Saturday with tip scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at White Auditorium.
•     The Ichabods (14-12, 10-11 MIAA) lost last time out at Missouri Western 74-66 and will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak.
•     The Hornets (13-14, 10-11 MIAA) are coming off a 77-74 loss at No. 15-ranked Northwest Missouri on Wednesday night.
•     The Ichabods won the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 23 in Topeka 70-62.
•     Washburn leads the all-time 107-101 and have won the last two meetings.
•     For postseason seedings, a win by the Ichabods will guarantee Washburn a home first round MIAA Tournament game on March 1. The Ichabods enter the game in four-way tie for seventh in the MIAA standings with Emporia State, Central Oklahoma and Lincoln at 10-11. The Ichabods are one win behind Pittsburg State and Lindenwood in the standings for fifth place. The Ichabod have the head-to-head tie breaker over Lindenwood after sweeping the two meetings. Northwest Missouri has clinched the MIAA regular season title and the top seed in the tournament. Nebraska-Kearney is second in the standings at 13-7 and Missouri Southern is third at 13-8. The top four teams in the final standings receive a bye to Kansas City, while teams five through eight will host a first round game on campus on March 1 at the higher seed hosting those teams who finished ninth through 12th in the standings.
•     Brady Skeens' broke the Ichabod single-season record with his 52nd and 53rd blocked shots at Lindenwood … he has now has 55 blocks this season leading the Ichabods … the next closest total is seven by Robert Christopher and Jeremy Lickteig … Skeens' 2.2 blocks per game ranks first on the single season chart ahead of Dan Buie's 1.7 blocks per game (27 games) in 1995-96 … his 67 career blocked shots is seventh on the career chart and his 1.7 career blocks per game average is first …  Skeens' 55 blocks this season are a Ichabod sophomore class chart breaking Dan Buie's 45 set in 1995-96 season.
•     The Ichabods have played in four overtime games this season going 2-2. Washburn is 33-34 all-time in overtime games. The Ichabod single season record for overtime games is five set during the 1994-95 and 2006-07 seasons.
•     In Washburn's 14 wins this season they are averaging 75.7 ppg while allowing 67.9 ppg … in the 12 losses they are averaging 72.4 ppg while allowing 82.3 ppg.
•     In Washburn's 14 wins they are +9.2 in rebound margin, while in the losses they are -5.5 on the glass.

 Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Missouri Western 74, Washburn 66 -- Feb. 24, 2016
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods lost on Wednesday night to Missouri Western falling 74-66 at the MWSU Fieldhouse.
The Ichabods led by four at the break at 34-30 after hitting 4 of 8 3-point attempts shooting 44 percent from the field compared to the Griffons shooting 7 of 20 from the field.
After Brady Skeens put the Ichabods up five at 36-31 with 19:34 to play, the Griffons used an 18-6 run over the next 8:21 taking a 49-42 lead with 11:13 to play.
With the Griffons leading 58-54 with 5:44 to play after a couple Western free throws, Christian Ulsaker hit a pair of free throws and Javion Blake hit a 3-pointer putting Washburn up 59-58 with 4:46 remaining.
However the Ichabods were outscored 16-7 the rest of the way as the Griffons were 9 of 12 from the free throw line going 3 of 4 from the field and Washburn was 2 of 4 from both the field and the free throw line as the Griffons held on for the eight-point win.
The Griffons finished the game 33 off 44 from the free throw line compared to 15 of 27 from the line for the Ichabods in the game as Washburn was whistled for three more fouls in the contest.
Washburn was led by Skeens who scored 17 points adding eight rebounds and Blake scored 16 hitting 4 of 8 3-point attempts.
Washburn (14-12, 10-11 MIAA) finished 22 of 48 from the field hitting 7 of 19 3-pointers while the Griffons were 17 of 42 overall and 7 of 23 from deep.
The Griffons (10-17, 8-13 MIAA) turned 18 Ichabod turnovers into 20 points while holding a 31 to 29 advantage on the glass.  

 About Emporia State
•      the Hornets are 13-14, 10-11 in the MIAA.
•     seven of their 11 losses are by five points or less.
•     have gone 8-4 in home games and 6-4 in MIAA home games.

•     The two teams started the series in 1905-06, Washburn's first recorded year of basketball, and they have met every year since the 1945-46 season.

 Last meeting with Emporia State
(Jan. 23, 2016) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team took the first meeting of two of the Turnpike Tussle with a 70-62 win over Emporia State on Saturday night in Lee Arena.
The Ichabods (11-6, 7-5 MIAA) led from start to finish in the game over Emporia State (8-10, 5-7 MIAA) building a lead of as many as 14 in the first half after an 8-0 run put the Ichabods up 33-19 with 2:30 to play before the half. The Hornets finished the half on a 10-1 run cutting the Ichabod advantage to 34-29 entering the break.
The Hornets continued their run pushing it up to a 14-1 run over a four-minute stretch trimming the Ichabod lead to one at 34-33 with 18:39 to go in the game before Cameron Wiggins and Brady Skeens each hit back to back lay ups pushing the lead back to five. The Ichabods would go up by 12 after a Skeens free throw with 5:44 to play before the Hornets again came back with an 8-2 run cutting the lead to six at 61-55 with 1:55 to play in the game.
Emporia State would get as close as four with 44 seconds to play, but Washburn hit three of four free throws to rest of the game holding the eight-point win over the Hornets.
Skeens led the ichabods with 15 points adding a career-high 16 rebounds for his fifth double double of the season hitting 5 of 7 shots going 5 of 8 from the free throw line. He also had four blocks and two assists in 33 minutes of work. Javion Blake had 14 points with five assists. Cameron Wiggins scored 10 points while Christian Ulsaker, Randall Smith and Jeremy Lickteig each had eight points.
Terrence Moore led the Hornets with 15 points.
The Ichabods outshot the Hornets 45 percent to 29 percent as Washburn finished 22 of 49 from the field compared to 19 of 65 from the field for the Hornets. Both teams had 39 rebounds, but 22 came on the offensive end for the Hornets. Washburn had 14 fast break points compared to six for the Hornets and outscored ESU 36 to 24 in the paint.   

 Last time out for Emporia State
(Feb. 24, 2016) Emporia State battled back from a 15 point deficit and had a chance to send the game to overtime before falling 77-74 at #15 Northwest Missouri on Wednesday night in Maryville, Mo.
Northwest Missouri won the opening tip and was able to keep the ball for 1:12 thanks to two offensive rebounds before finally scoring.  They would take a 6-0 lead and went up 16-6 with 11:59 left in the half.  The Hornets cut the lead to five at 22-17 on a Josh Pederson dunk with 6:39 remaining.  The Bearcats then went on a 9-2 run to go up 31-19 with 3:37 remaining and would push the lead to 15 points at 38-23 with 42 seconds left in the half.
The Hornets got a layup from Devin Spencer with 26 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 13 points and would then score the first eight points of the second half to pull within 38-33 with 17:58 left in the game.  Spanning halftime, Emporia State would hold Northwest scoreless for 5:06 before the Bearcats finally got on the board with 15:24 left in the game.  Another 8-0 run would give the Hornets their first lead of the game at 46-45 with 12:54 remaining on a Micah Swank three-pointer.
Over the next seven minutes there would be three lead changes and two ties, with neither team taking more than a one possession lead until Northwest went up by five points with 7:49 left.  Their lead would grow to 68-59 with 4:28 remaining when Emporia State went on an 11-2 run to pull within 71-70 on another Swank three-pointer with 1:49 left. 
D'Vante Mosby answered Swank's three with a layup at the 1:24 mark to give the Bearcats a 73-70 lead.  Kevin Allen scored off a Terrence Moore assist with 1:02 remaining to make it 73-72.  Northwest's Justin Pitts hit a layup with 40.5 remaining to push the lead back to three points at 75-72.  Charles McKinney tipped in an Allen miss with 23.5 left to pull the Hornets back within one point.  Mosby then hit two free throws with 20.5 to give the Bearcats a 77-74 lead.  Emporia State called timeout with 18.3 seconds left to set up the final play.  Micah Swank was able to get a three-pointer from the corner that rimmed out and although Allen got the rebound, the Hornets did not have enough time for another three-pointer.
 Terrence Moore led Emporia State with 19 points and five assists while Kevin Allen had a near double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds.  They were joined in double figures by Micah Swank with 11 points.  The Hornets hit 28 of 57 field goal attempts and made eight three-pointers, but only connected on ten of 15 free throws.  The Bearcats were 24 of 47 from the field with three treys and went 26 of 28 from the charity stripe.
