Ichabod softball team opens MIAA play with Blue Tigers/Lions this weekend

Washburn Ichabods open MIAA slate with weekend trip . . .
•  The Washburn Ichabod softball team returns to action for the first time since Feb. 20 when they will open MIAA play with a pair of doubleheaders at Lincoln on March 4 and at Lindenwood on March 5.
•  Washburn (4-5, 0-0 MIAA) will play a total of 15 games on the road before opening home play with a non-conference doubleheader with Emporia State on March 12 in Topeka.
  Warm ups . . .
•  After the first five games of the season, the Ichabods are led by a pair of freshmen who are both hitting above .387.
•  Freshman Ashley Ruder leads the Ichabods with a .571 batting average tying for the team lead with 12 hits … she missed two games at the Winona State Dome Classic after needing stitches after being hit while batting and having her helmet cracked.
•  Freshman Erin Keeney is batting .387 with 12 hits while recording 6 RBI and three runs scored … Keeney leads the team with five multi-hit games.
•  Seniors Haylee Marsteller and Marina Quimby each have six runs scored leading the team.
•  Sophomore Cassidy Merriman leads the team with eight RBI … she also carries a seven-game hitting streak into MIAA action and leads the team with three multi-RBI games.
•  Junior pitcher Samantha Carson leads the team with a 3-1 record and a 1.83 earned run average in 38 1/3 innings pitched … in relief she has pitched 8 1/3 innings with a 0.00 earned run average striking out four allowing only one unearned run.
•  Ruder and Merriman have both reached base in seven straight games.
 
  Scouting the field . . .
Lincoln
•  The Blue Tigers are 0-11 this season entering a non-conference doubleheader with Drury on March 2 prior to facing the Ichabods on March 4.
•  The Blue Tigers have been outscored 104 to 12 this season.
• Tori Mienhueser leads the team with a .276 batting average. Madison Ragar leads the team with an 0-3 pitching record and a 8.58 earned run average.
•  Washburn leads the all-time series 25-6 and have won the last two meetings.
•  Lincoln is led by first-year head coach Chad Kerr.
Lindenwood
•  The Lions are 2-12 this season after going 0-5 at the Rosemont Dome Tournament.
•  The Lions will be taking on Rockhurst on March 2 before opening MIAA play with Emporia State on March 4 prior to facing the Ichabods.
•  The Ichabods lead the all-time series with Lindenwood 6-3.
•  The two teams split their conference doubleheaders in 2015.
 
 Bods and ends . . .
• Haylee Marsteller went over the 100-hit mark at the Winona State Dome Classic … she now has 105 for her career … her 52 career walks are 10th on the Ichabod career chart.
•  Marina Quimby needs 12 runs for 100 for her career and needs seven more hits to reach 150.
•  As a program, the Ichabods need two wins to reach 1,100.
 
 Last time out . . .
(Feb. 20, 2016) ROCHESTER, Minn. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the WSU Dome Classic on Saturday.
Game 1 - Washburn 8, Upper Iowa 4 (9 innings)
The Ichabods rallied for an 8-4 win in nine innings in the opener recording four runs in the ninth for the win. After the Peacocks took a 3-0 lead after two innings, Washburn scored two in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Lacie Myers and Taylor Zimmerman also scored in the inning. In the sixth, Washburn added a solo run on an RBI single by Erin Keeney tying the game. The Ichabods took a 4-3 lead in the eighth taking advantage of an Upper Iowa error, but UIU scored in the bottom of the eighth tying the score back at 4-4. In the ninth, Washburn scored four times capped by a 2-RBI singles by Cassidy Merriman and Lexie Myers. Samantha Carson shut the door on the Peacocks in the ninth tossing a complete game scattering 10 hits striking out four.
Game 2 - Northern State 7, Washburn 2
The Ichabods were down 7-0 after four innings and could not come back in the loss to Northern State. Cassidy Merriman hit a 2-run homer in the sixth scoring Megan Stegman accounting for Washburn's only runs of the game.
 
 Ichabod head coach Vanessa Becerra . . .
• was named the Washburn Ichabod head softball coach on Aug. 3, 2011 after spending four seasons at Metro State in Denver, Colo., with the final season coming as the head coach.
• is 83-109 in her fifth season on the bench at Washburn and overall Becerra has recorded a 117-127 mark in her sixth year as a head coach.
• in her lone season as the head coach at Metro State, Becerra led the Roadrunners the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship while advancing to the NCAA regional tournament for the third-straight season finishing with a 34-18 record.
• has coached 20 Ichabods to all-MIAA honors.
• has had 54 Ichabods named to the MIAA's Academic Honor Roll.
 
 Ichabod softball history. . .
• The Ichabods are 1098-816-1 in their 47th year of softball.
• The Ichabods have made three NCAA Tournament appearances (1999, 2006, 2008).
• Washburn won the 2002 regular season MIAA title.

 Up next . . .
•  After a two MIAA games with Emporia State on March 11, the Ichabods will host the Hornets in non-conference action on March 12 in Topeka in its home openers before returning to MIAA play against Northeastern State at the Washburn Softball Complex on March 15.
