Ichabod football team heads to Kearney to take on the Lopers

Opening Notes
•   The Washburn Ichabod football team will be looking for its second-straight win as they travel to Kearney, Neb., to take on the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers with a 2 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 24.
•  The Ichabods (2-1, 2-1 MIAA) are coming off a 34-29 win over Lindenwood last time out in front of a Family Day crowd in Yager Stadium of 6,721 fans.
•  The Lopers (0-3, 0-3 MIAA) are falling to No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri 52-14 in Maryville … Saturday's game will be Homecoming for the Lopers.
•   The Ichabods have won the last seven in the series and eight of the last 10 overall.
•   Last season's game in Topeka started on Sept. 10 and ending the following morning after 97-minute delay pushed the game to finish the following morning … in all, the game finished 18 hours and 12 minutes after the original start time.
•  Washburn trails in the all-time series 10-14 … Washburn has won the last three meetings played in Kearney.
•   The Ichabods have had 25 plays of longer than 20 yards this season including four more than 50 yards.
•  The Ichabods are averaging 3.9 yards per carry on first down, 4.0 yards per carry on second down and 2.5 yards per carry on third down … on fourth down the Ichabods are averaging 5.5 yards per carry on two attempts.

Nebraska-Kearney head coach Josh Lamberson . . .

Ichabod Defensive Notes
•   The Ichabods held Lindenwood to 160 yards in the first half of play last time out.
•   Cody Heiman leads the team with 29 tackles with 15 solo stops adding 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks with an interception and seven passes defended …  he had a career-high 14 tackles against Lindenwood en route to MIAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors … he needs 21 tackles to reach 200 total tackles for his career.
•   Trey Parker tied a career-high for tackles with seven last time out against Lindenwood.
•  Spenser Matthews leads the Ichabods with three tackles for loss for 11 yards and has two sacks … he is ranked third in the MIAA in tackles for loss with 5.0 for 15 yards and he  is third in sacks at 2.5 total.
•  Cedric Gonzalez had a career-highs in tackles in back to back games after recording four at Northwest Missouri and then nine against Lindenwood with seven solo stops.
•  Kastin Spencer recorded four tackles tying a career-high adding is first career sack against Lindenwood.
•   Austin Tillman recorded a career-high 11 tackles against Lindenwood with three solo stops.
•  The Ichabods have the third-best total defense in the league allowing 381.3 yards per game … Northwest Missouri leads the league with 189.7 yards per game and Nebraska-Kearney is last allowing 490.7 yards per game.
•   Washburn is third in the league in rush defense allowing 120.7 yards per game trailing Missouri Western (60.0 ypg) and Northwest Missouri (60.7 ypg).
•  The Ichabods are second in the league in sacks with nine for 47 yards … Northwest Missouri leads the league with 10 sacks.
 
Ichabod Offensive Notes
•  Jake Horner has three of the four longest plays this season for the Ichabod offense all on passes from Derek McGinnis in receptions of 63-, 62- and 50-yards all going for touchdowns.
•   Horner is ranked fifth in the MIAA in receiving averaging 87.7 yards per game.
•  Derek McGinnis went over the 3,000-yard passing mark against Lindenwood lifting his career total to 3,022 yards … which is 10th on the all-time passing chat at Washburn …he needs 255 yards to move into ninth all-time.
•   Bryce Chavis recorded two touchdowns for the third time in his career against Lindenwood with the second one coming on a 25-yard rushing touchdown … he has 883 career receiving yards and 59 catches.
•   The Ichabods are eighth in scoring offense at 26.3 ppg in the MIAA rankings and eighth in total offense at 384.7 yards per game.
•   Washburn has the sixth-best rushing offense in the league at 148.7 yards per game and they are ranked 10th in passing offense at 236.0 yards per game.
 
Ichabod Special Team Notes
•  Perry Schmiedeler recorded a career-high three field goals including a long of 39 yards against the RiverHawks and he scored a career-high 12 points with the three field goals and three extra points.
•  Perry Schmiedeler is eighth in the MIAA in kick scoring at 5.7 points per game.
•   Schmiedeler recorded his longest punt of his Ichabod career with a 64-yard boot against Lindenwood.
•   Schmiedeler is fourth in the MIAA in punting with a 38.9 ypg average.
 
Know the Foe
•  Nebraska-Kearney is 0-3 this season and have lost its last 14 games dating back to a 42-40 win over Emporia State in the final game of the 2014 season.
•   Tyke Kozeal leads the MIAA in tackles with 17.3 per game.
•   The Lopers are coming off a 52-14 loss to Northwest Missouri last time out.
•   Opponents have 72 first downs compared to 34 for the Lopers.
•   The Lopers are averaging 32.0 yards per game on the ground and allowing 236.3 yards per game while passing for 207.3 yards per game and allowing 254.3.

Last Meeting With Nebraska-Kearney
(09/10/2015) TOPEKA, Kan. -- More than 18 hours after it started, the Washburn Ichabods finished off their win over Nebraska-Kearney with a 34-14 victory over the Lopers on Friday morning at Yager Stadium.
The game resumed with 11:59 left in the third quarter with the Ichabods kicking off to the Lopers holding a 27-7 lead. Neither team would score after the game resumed until Brandon Marsh scored on an 18-yard rush with 13:04 to play in the game cutting the Ichabod lead to 27-14.
Washburn responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive when Bourbon scored from 1-yard out putting the Ichabods back up 34-14 with 8:19 to go wrapping up the scoring and the 20-point win for the Ichabods as they picked up their seventh straight win over the Lopers.
Prior to the game being postponed, Washburn went up 27-7 on a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Derek McGinnis taking advantage of a Loper interception by Dwane Simmons setting up the score for the Ichabods.
Washburn wasted no time getting on the board as the Ichabods scored on the first play of the game when McGinnis hit Jordan Hart on a 59-yard touchdown strike putting the Ichabods on the board first.
The Ichabods forced a fumble by Alec Steuber on the Lopers' first possession and then McGinnis hit Connor Crimmins with a 14-yard touchdown pass stretching the lead to 14-0 with 9:15 to play in the first quarter. The Lopers scored when Bronson Marsh hit Tityus Mitchell on a 46-yard touchdown pass cutting Washburn's lead to 14-7 with 7:23 to play in the opening quarter.
Washburn stretched its lead to 21-7 after McGinnis threw his third touchdown pass of the game on a 9-yard completion to Bryce Chavis with 8:03 to play in the first half wrapping up the scoring.
Bourbon led the Ichabods with 96 yards rushing on 24 carries and one score and McGinnis finished 17 of 32 for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Hart had six catches for a game-high 153 yards and one score and Chavis and Crimmins each had touchdown catches as well.
Defensively Spenser Matthews had 11 tackles with five solo stops adding three sacks for 18 yards and four tackles for loss for 22 yards with a pass break up and a quarterback hurry.Shay Wooten finished with nine tackles and Alec Steuber had eight tackles with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Zach Franklin, Dwane Simmons and Jamie Myers all had interceptions in the game.
Overall Washburn finished with 367 yards of offense holding the Lopers to 301 yards.
 
Last Time Out For Nebraska-Kearney
(9/17/2016) Kearney, Neb. – Defending national champion Northwest Missouri State used the big play to defeat Nebraska-Kearney, 52-14, Saturday afternoon in Maryville.
A "Family Day" crowd of 8,550 watched the Bearcats improve to 3-0 and record an 18th straight victory.
Both teams used the big play to put points on the board. For Northwest, fifth-senior quarterback Kyle Zimmerman had touchdown passes of 40, 42, 52 and 75 yards. He finished 14 of 25 for 277 yards and no interceptions while rushing five times for 29 yards.
Luke Quinn had a 72-yard TD catch to start the game
The Bearcats took control of the contest by scoring 21 points in the final 2:13 of the first half, making the score 38-7. The barrage began with a 59-yard interception return for a TD by junior linebacker Jarrod Bishop.
Next, senior receiver George Sehl (two recep., 82 yards) caught a 42-yard stroke from Zimmerman with 1:41 left and then, after a fourth down stop by the 'Cats defense, sophomore receiver Shawn Bane Jr. hauled in a 52-yard TD pass.
To start the second half, Bane Jr. (two recep., 127 yards) hooked up with Zimmerman from 75 yards out.
UNK got into the big play act as sophomore running back Luke Quinn (Chandler, Ariz.) caught a short pass from redshirt freshman QB Steve Worthing (Elkhorn South H.S.) and raced untouched down the field for a 72-yard score. It was just the third play from scrimmage and gave the Lopers a 7-0 lead.
Late in the third quarter, senior corner Antwan Hadley (Lake Wales, Fla.) picked off a tipped pass and went 85 yards for his second score in a UNK uniform.
Overall, Northwest tallied 486 yards of offense to UNK's 171. The 'Cats ground attack went for 184 yards on 44 carries with 12 different players catching a pass. The NW defense managed seven tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 35 yards.
For Kearney, Worthing went 10 of 24 for 134 yards, one TD and one INT.  He also gained 34 yards on eight carries. Redshirt freshman Justin Roberts (Arvada, Colo.) also played for a third straight week and was 4 of 9 for 18 yards and one INT, which came via deflection.
Seven Lopers caught a pass, led by Texas senior Preston Foley with four. True freshman receiver Kentrez Bell (Kansas City) managed 31 yards on three receptions.
Defensively, Sargent senior linebacker Tyke Kozeal had a game-high 19 tackles, 13 of the solo variety. The pushed his career total to 482. Also, redshirt freshman safety Dallas Vaughn (St. Louis) had seven stops, including a crushing blow in the first half. He also recovered a fumble late in the fourth quarter.
 
Last Time Out For The Ichabods
(9/17/2106) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod football team jumped out to a big lead and then held off a furious comeback attempt from Lindenwood intercepting a pass in the end zone on the final play of the game in a 34-29 win over the Lions.
After taking a 34-13 lead into the halftime locker room, the Ichabods allowed 16 unanswered point as the Lions' last-second heave with one second left on the clock from the Ichabod 48 was picked off in the end zone by Jace Williams sealing the win for the Ichabods.
The Ichabods racked up 304 yards in the first half, but were limited to 100 yards in the second half.
The Lions (1-2, 1-2 MIAA) took the opening kickoff and marched 78 yards in 11 plays going up 7-0 on their first drive of the game. Washburn tied the score  with 6:07 to play in the first quarter when Derek McGinnis hit Jake Horner on a 62-yard touchdown pass.
The second quarter, the Ichabods defense set the offense up with the first of two scores within a span of 1:27 when Cedric Gonzalez recovered a fumble after a Kastin Spencer sack. One play later McGinnis connected with Jace Williams on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 14:16 to go.
After the defense forced a three-and-out, McGinnis hit Bryce Chavis on a 51-yard touchdown pass with 12:17 to play in the half putting Washburn up 28-7.
After a Cody Heiman's interception at the Ichabod 45 with 8:41 left in the first half, Chavis scored his second touchdown of the night on an end around run from 25 yards out putting Washburn up 34-7 entering the break.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Lions scored on their first three possessions of the fourth quarter to cut the Ichabod lead to five at 34-29 as the Ichabods were outgained in the second half 253 to 100.
Heiman had a career-high 14 tackles leading the Ichabods with nine solo stops adding a 1/2 sack and an interception. Austin Tillman had 11 tackles adding two for loss and a sack.
Mickeel Stewart rushed for 47 yards on 14 carries and Chris McGee, Jr., recorded 41 yards on 12 carries and a score.
McGinnis finished 14 of 24 passing for 247 yards and three scores while passing to eight different receivers led by Horner with 101 yards on four catches and a score and Chavis had four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown reception.
Lindenwood finished with 28 first downs to the Ichabods 16 and outgained the Ichabods 423 to 404.
Washburn had 157 yards on the ground and the Lions finished with 162. Through the air, Washburn had 247 to while the Lions had 261.
Jace Williams became the first Ichabod since Carey Williams on Oct. 6, 2007 to record a receiving touchdown and an interception in the game game when Carey did it against Missouri Southern.
 
A Win Over Nebraska-Kearney Would
