Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Washburn 90, Emporia State 63 -- Feb. 14, 2017
TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back as they defeated Emporia State 90-63 on Valentine's Day at Schendel Court at Lee Arena on Tuesday night.
After jumping out to the 10-0 lead 5:11 into the game, Emporia State scored a 3-pointer to cut the lead to seven, but then Washburn scored eight of the next 10 going up 18-5 with 11:19 to play in the opening half.
Emporia State used a 14-4 run over the next 4:45 to cut the lead down to three at 22-19 with 6:34 to play, but the Ichabods (16-9, 8-8 MIAA) responded with a 22-8 run over their own going 8 of 10 from the field and hitting all four 3-point attempts led by
Isaac Clark's seven points and Brady Skeen's six points during the spurt.
Washburn shot a smoking 63 percent from the field in the opening half hitting 17 of 27 shots while holding ESU to 30 percent of 9 of 30 overall.
The Ichabods would go on to lead by 36 in the game with 4:42 to play at 80-44 after a bucket by
Tyas Martin. The Hornets used a 14-5 run to cut the lead under 30 but would not get within 27 only twice at the end of the game.
Skeens recorded career highs with 28 points and six blocks hitting 12 of 17 shots from the field in the win to lead all scorers finishing with nine rebounds. Clark had 17 on 6 of 8 shooting and
Javion Blake scored 14.
Randall Smith scored three points but dished out eight assists and three steals.
ESU (12-13, 8-8 MIAA) did not have a Hornet reach double figure scoring and finished with two players with nine points.
The Ichabods finished 64 percent from the field going 36 of 56 and hit 7 of 16 3-pointers and 11 of 17 from the free throw line. ESU was 21 of 57 overall and 6 of 23 from 3-point range with 15 of 20 from the free throw line.
Washburn outscored the Hornets 56 to 26 in the paint and scored 22 off of the Hornets' 13 turnovers.

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods fell behind 7-0 2:31 into the game but outscored Southwest Baptist 36-16 the rest of the first half as the Ichabods rolled to a 76-63 over the Bearcats.
After the Ichabods (14-5, 6-4 MIAA) would go 12 of 20 hitting 6 of 10 3-point attempts the rest of the first half while SBU (10-9, 3-7 MIAA) were limited to 6 of 22 shooting and 2 of 8 shooting while committing nine turnovers.
Washburn turned a 15-point lead with 14:10 to play in the game into a 26-point lead as they went 7 of 7 from the field during the stretch connecting on a pair of free throws to put the game out of reach as the Bearcats would get no closer than 13 with 25 seconds to play.
Isaac Clark led the Ichabods with 15 points going 6 of 11 from the field pacing five different Washburn player in double figures.
Drew Pyle scored 12 all coming on 3-pointers finishing 4 of 5 overall.

Washburn finished 53 percent from the field going 30 of 57 including 8 of 19 from 3-point range while SBU was 21 of 49 for a 43 percent clip hitting 10 of 19 3-pointers.
Each team finished with 33 rebounds and the Ichabods took advantage of 16 Bearcat turnovers leading to 20 points for Washburn. The Ichabod bench outscored SBU 38 to 24 in the game and 30 to 22 in the paint.
Washburn, who shot 43 percent overall in the first half, hit 18 of 29 shots in the second half for a blistering 62 percent from the field as they would lead by as many as 26 in the game midway through the second half.
Last Time Out For Southwest Baptist
Emporia State 71, Southwest Baptist 69 -- Feb. 16, 2017
Emporia, Kan. - Trailing by 11 with under three minutes to play, the Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team came up just short at Emporia State on Thursday evening, 71-69. With the loss SBU falls to 14-11 (7-9 MIAA) on the season.
Kalehl Brown opened the scoring up for the Bearcats with a layup from Cartree Pettis as the two teams went back-and-forth for the first four minutes of the game. ESU used a 5-0 run to push their lead to seven at 14-7 with 15:00 remaining in the first half, and held a nine point advantage with 12:55 remaining. The Bearcats continued to hang around, and five points from Logan Hovey and a layup from Brian Patterson brought SBU back within two at 18-16 with 9:49 left in the half.
The two teams continued to trade buckets, and a Kai Woodfall three with 5:39 left in the half gave SBU a 26-25 lead. ESU responded to tie the game at 28 with 3:37, but a Hovey three gave SBU a 31-28 lead. The Hornets eventually re-took the lead at 34-33, but a Karim Mouliom layup with 48 seconds left in the half gave SBU a 35-34 lead. ESU connected one of two free throws as the two teams went into the break tied at 35.
With SBU trailing 39-37 with 17:10 left in the game, the Hornets used a 10-0 run to push their lead to double-digits at 49-37 with 12:43 to go. The Bearcats and Hornets continued to exchange points for the next 10 minutes, as SBU trailed 66-55 with 2:53 remaining. SBU slowly started to chip away at the lead, after a free throw from Woodfall and a layup from Pettis, SBU pulled the deficit back to single digits at 66-58 with 2:40 to go. Kalund Brown hit back-to-back layups off of ESU missed jumpers, as the Bearcats trailed 66-62 with 1:33 remaining. ESU connected on three straight free throws to push their lead back to seven at 69-62, but two Kalehl Brown free throws and an old-fashioned three point play from Pettis cut the deficit to two at 69-67 with 32 seconds remaining. The two teams exchanged layups, and after two missed free throws by Emporia the Bearcats got the ball back with 11 seconds remaining. SBU was unable to convert on a pair of shots down the stretch as the Bearcats came up just short in a 71-69 loss.
Logan Hovey and Kalehl Brown both had a team high 15 points, while Cartree Pettis chipped in 11 points in the loss. As a team SBU shot 50.0% from the field, 45.5% from beyond the arc, and 66.7% from the line.
