ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team split its first day of action at the Hy-Vee/Missouri Western Classic topping Mary 8-1 before falling in the nightcap 7-3 to Minnesota State. Washburn returns to action on Saturday with Winona State at noon and Augustana at 2 p.m.

Game 1 - Washburn 8, Mary 1
The Ichabods wasted little time rolling to the 8-1 win over the Mauraders by scoring five runs in the first inning capped by a 3-run homer by Savannah Moore scoring Erica Harper who walked and Jordan Erickson who reached on an error. Washburn added two more runs on an RBI single by Dakota Sanders and an RBI by Lexi Myers.

Mary scored one in the second inning and Washburn remained scoreless until adding three more in the top of the seventh when Taylor Kemp's 2-RBI single scored Megan Stegman and Moore who reached on a walk and a hit by pitch. Lexie Myers drove in another run in the inning.

Kelsee Henry pitched six innings with a pair of strikeouts for the win improving to 5-9. Moore had 3 RBI and Kemp and Lexie Myers each had two.

Game 2 - Minnesota State 7, Washburn 3
The Mavericks scored in the top of the first taking a 1-0 lead and took advantage of an unearned run in the third to go up 2-0. After the Mavericks added another run in the fourth and four more in the fifth taking a 7-0 lead, Washburn picked up two runs on Savannah Moore's second second home run of the day scoring Chantal Prester.

Washburn added its third run in the seventh after Megan Stegman doubled to lead off the inning and then later scored on an RBI single to center by Jordan Erickson to pull the Ichabods within 7-3 to wrap up the scoring.
