TOPEKA, Kan. --- Washburn women's tennis remains spotless at home after grinding out a 5-4 win over Newman Saturday afternoon at the Topeka Country Club.
Washburn picked up two of three doubles points to take a one-point advantage heading into singles play.
Madeline Hill and
Jacqueline Engelbrecht downed Janneke Rijk and Marit Lemmens 8-3 to put Washburn on the board first.
Ally Burr and
Madison Lysaught paired up to post a 8-5 win over Emily Wise and Mariana Guvaria.
Logan Morrissey and
MaKenna Gonzales were outlasted 8-4 by Kateryna Stoianova and Niamh Packer.
Hill would lead the way in singles by picking up her 22
nd win this season by way of a 6-1, 6-0 ousting of Rijk.
Logan Morrissey dropped a match to Packer in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 before Engelbrecht had a comeback halted in a 6-4, 7-5, 10-8 loss to Stoianova.
Gonzales would drop a 7-6, 6-2 decision to Lemmens and Newman would take 4-3 lead overall.
Trailing by one Burr would take the court against Wise and blank the Newman netter 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets to tie the match four-all.
Lysaught would take the court with the Ichabods win streak on the line against Guvaria in the most decisive match of the afternoon. After stealing the first set 7-5 Lysaught would get out to an early lead over the Newman netter before allowing two consecutive points. Lysaught would power back to close out the second set 6-3 and clinch the win for Washburn.
Washburn improves to 5-2 on the season and will next head to Northwest Missouri on March 7 to open conference play.
