TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team dropped a pair of MIAA doubleheaders in its home opener falling 11-1 and 8-5 to Pittsburg State. The Ichabods will return to action on Friday playing host to Missouri Southern starting at 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Pittsburg State 11, Washburn 1 (5 innings)
The Gorillas used a pair of solo home runs in the second and third inning jumping out to a 2-0 lead and then broke the game open with seven unearned runs in the fourth inning leading to nine runs as PSU took an 11-0 lead.
The Ichabods got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when
Chantal Prester scored on an error by the Gorillas for Washburn's lone run of the game.
Washburn had five hits with
Ashley Ruder collecting two of them.
Jordan Erickson,
Taylor Kemp and Prester recorded the remaining hits.
Ashley Wills dropped to 5-2 in the circle scattering five hits allowing only three earned runs.
Lexi Crabtree pitched the final two innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Game 2 – PSU 8, WU 5
For the second game in a row, the Gorillas jumped out to an early lead leading 5-0 after scoring a solo run in the first and then adding three more in the third and another one in the fourth.
Washburn scored two runs in the fourth on an RBI ground out by
Lacie Myers scoring
Britnee Douglas who pinch ran for
Erica Harper after leading off the inning with a single.
Megan Stegman's single to center scored
Savannah Moore who doubled as Washburn trimmed the Gorilla lead to 5-2.
PSU took advantage of three errors in the fifth inning by the Ichabods to score two more runs adding another unearned run in the sixth.
Washburn scored a solo run in the fifth inning on an error by the Gorillas.
In the seventh,
Lacie Myers hit her first home run of the season scoring Moore who reached on an error. In all, there were a combined eight errors in the second game with four coming for each squad.
Lacie Myers finished with three hits while driving in three in the second game. Moore had two hits and Ruder, Kemp, Stegman and
Lexie Myers each had one.
Kelsee Henry struck out two in four innings before giving away to
Samantha Carson who pitched the final three innings without yielding an earned run.
In the doubleheader,
Lacie Myers and
Ashley Ruder each had three hits while
Taylor Kemp and
Savannah Moore had two with Moore scoring a pair of runs.
