TOPEKA, Kan. -- THe Washburn Ichabod softball team wrapped up its home slate for the 2017 season on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep by Emporia State falling 7-5 in the opener in 11 innings and 6-1 in the nightcap. Washburn will now play its final eight games of the season on the road starting at Central Missouri on Friday looking to shore up an MIAA Tournament appearance for the first time since the 2015 season.
Game 1 - Emporia State 7, Washburn 5 (11 innings)
The Ichabods broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when
Megan Stegman hit her fourth home of the season to left staking Washburn to a 1-0 lead.
The following inning,
Erica Harper's team-high 10th home run put the Ichabods up 2-0.
Emporia State came back to tie the game with two of its own in the top of the sixth on a two out, 2 RBI double by Hailey Cope tying the score at 2-2.
Neither team scored again until the 10th inning when ESU scored three runs in the frame after a 2-run homer by Cope.
The Ichabods rallied with three of their own in the bottom of the 10th when
Taylor Kemp's triple down the line scored
Savannah Moore and
Ashley Ruder who was a pinch runner for
Erica Harper who singled. Kemp came around and scored on a double by Stegman tying the score at 5-5.
The Hornets took the lead for good with two runs in the 11th on a home run by starting pitcher Eryn Stockman. The Ichabods went down in order in the 11th as ESU held on for the 7-5 run.
Dakota Sanders and Moore tied a school record with six at bats in the game and Harper, Erickson and Kemp had nine of Washburn's 11 hits with Stegman recording the other two.
Lexi Crabtree tossed 146 pitches for the Ichabods striking out four falling to 3-4 on the season.
Game 2 - ESU 6, WU 1
The Ichabods scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning after Kemp doubled to right center and then scored on a double by Moore.Â
However ESU scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth leading to the 6-1 win.
ESU outhit the Ichabods 8 to 5 in the loss dropping Washburn starter
Kelsee Henry to 9-12 on the season.
Kemp and Erickson finished with four hits in the doubleheader to lead the Ichabod attack and Harper finished with three.
