LINCOLN, Neb. --- The Washburn women's tennis team fell behind early in a 5-2 loss to second-seeded No. 16 Southwest Baptist in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals.
24 hours removed from the only upset thus far into the MIAA tournament, the regionally-ranked Ichabods struggled out of the gate. No. 7
Madeline Hill and
Jacqueline Engelbrecht were defeated in a tight match at No. 1 doubles, 9-8.
Ally Burr and
Logan Morrissey fell short at No. 2 doubles in an 8-6 decision.
Madison Lysaught and
MaKenna Gonzales were also defeated in an 8-6 decision at the third slot.
Facing an uphill battle, the Ichabods headed into singles action where a regionally-ranked Southwest Baptist netter immediately added another notch to its win column defeating Engelbrecht at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-4.
Morrissey collected a win in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to put Washburn on the board as they trailed 4-1.
Seventh-ranked Hill would fight her way to a three set win at No. 1 singles. After dropping the opening set 6-3, Hill claimed the final two frames 6-0, 7-6.
The Bearcats would cut the match short after defeating Gonzales in straight sets at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the victory.
Lysaught was attempting a comeback on court five and was leading 2-1 in the second frame after dropping the opening set 6-2.
Burr also dropped the opening frame of her match at No. 6 singles and was tied 1-1 in the second set.
Washburn is currently ranked sixth in the Central Region and drops to 13-8 on the season. The Ichabods will await the conclusion of other conference tournaments in the region to see if they will receive a bid to the National Tournament.
