Women's Tennis Faces Southwest Baptist in Regional Showdown

First serve . . . 

• Washburn women's tennis makes its first appearance in the NCAA tournament after a seven year hiatus.

•  The Ichabods will match-up with third-seed Southwest Baptist in one of the two Central Regionals on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Okla. 

•  Washburn is in the midst of its best season under head coach Lance Lysaught posting a 13-8 record inlcuding an upset of  third-seeded Central Oklahoma in the MIAA Semifinals.

•  Washburn trails the all-time series with Southwest Baptist 22-7 after falling to the Bearcats in the MIAA Semifinal 2-5. 

 Racking up Rankings . . . 

• Washburn heads into its third season under head coach Lance Lysaught led by sophomore Madeline Hill who holds the No. 13 spot in the ITA Division II singles rankings.

• Hill leads the team with a 36-2 record in singles and holds the program record for singles-season singles wins. 

• Jacqueline Engelbrecht and Hill have teamed up to post a 27-6 doubles record and are currently ranked 5th in the region.

•  The pair current sits in second-place in the Washburn record books for single season doubles wins.

• To go along with its national rankings, Washburn is tabbed 6th in the central region with Hill leading the way at No. 1 in singles. 

All-MIAA and More. . .

• Madeline Hill picked up 2017 MIAA Player of the Year honors, marking the first time the award has landed at Washburn in seven seasons.

• Hill paired up with Jacqueline Engelbrecht for honorable mention accolades at No. 1 doubles.

• Logan Morrissey added an exclamation point to a successful season earning Second Team All-MIAA honors at the third slot.

• Morrissey paired up with MaKenna Gonzales to earn honorable mention honors at No. 3 doubles.

• Players weren't the only award winners of the season, head coach Lance Lysaught earned MIAA Coach of the Year honors after leading the Ichabods to its best season in five years.

The Opps. . .

•  Southwest Baptist is a perfect 18-3 on the season under head coach John Bryant.  

•  SBU heads into the Central Regional ranked 21st nationally and third in the Central Region having fell in the MIAA Championship to Northeastern State. 

• The Bearcats defeated Washburn in the MIAA Tournament semifinals. 

 Tournament success. . .

•  The Ichabods closed out the 2016 calendar year with each player picking up at least one flight victory in tournament play.

• Three Ichabod netters ended 2016 with a spot in a ITA Central Regional final which was capped off with a singles victory by Madeline Hill. 

 Coaching . . . 

•  Former Ichabod tennis player Lance Lysaught is in his third season at the helm of the Ichabod women's tennis program. He is 36-52 as a women's collegiate head coach in his fifth season and 25-35 at Washburn.

• Washburn added former Washburn men's tennis standout, David Price, as the assistant coach to both the men and women's teams during the offseason.
